Stetson Nutria

This is the only true western I own. I was trying to go for a bash similar to the one rlk has in his tan Mexican hat.

Very nice!:eusa_clap

Thanks guys - it's very tight, but the little stretch I've given it so far has held for several days, so I'll try adding a bit more. It's really interesting to see folks like rlk wearing so many different styles comfortably - gets guys like me to branch out a little. I've worn cowboy boots most of my life, but never the hat.

Cowboy hat with suit

When my grandfather died, everyone wore their cowboy hat, as he was seldom seen without one, even at 99. There were mounted police outside the service holding his horse with his favorite Stetson hung on his saddle horn in memoriam.

Here are two of my favorites. The first is an Akubra Cattleman pinched and rolled in a 1950's style commonly seen in old westerns. I have three of these in different colors. It's my favorite western style though it is more classic Hollywood than true West. Roy Rogers wore a similar style as did William Holden in the Wild Bunch and Clint Eastwood on Rawhide. The second one is an Akubra Bobby completely reworked into more of a 1920's style. This look was inspired by some old Tom Mix serials. Sadly, this hat has been sold. I love western hats because there's so much latitude for making it your own. The style is really wide open in terms of size, crease, color, brim shape, and even the band.

.....The cattleman is very Randolph Scott.......His headgear and horses in those old Bud Boetticher movies from the late forties early fifties was the best.

Ok - my turn (again) in testimony to the old western hat...

My old Beaver Brand (or is it Beaver Hats? I think it's the same) "custom" cowboy hat, which I bought off the bay more than a year ago, shown here in its original form - didn't like it too much, really: too 1980's disco cowboy...mushy:

A few days ago, I set to fooling around with it, rebashed it to this result:

The headband is a combination of a fairly "standard" 3/8 inch or so western leather band (embroidered with some twirly design) overlapping a 6/8 inch entwined horsehair band with two tassles, which I bound together so as to point backwards. The red strands are in fact a length of twine from a Moroccan (handmade traditional) carpet, used to keep the two bands together, tie-up the tassles and ... give the lot a bit of color.

Below, two detail photo's. The medallon is, yes, a representation of the Virgen de Guadelupe, which a received as a gift from the -now deceased- mom of a mexican lady neighbor.

Here's the tassles.

This hat's for fun and keeping my head warm...

Thanks for that, jwalls. The more we drag, send, sail, dance... or live traditional North American culture around the world, the better off we will all be...
Tongue firmly in cheek, I hope.

Nevertheless, to cover my bets I'm putting all my
Borsalinos in the fireplace tonight. Heck, anything that
isn't a Stetson.

Looking forward to Korean food at lunch today. Thank goodness
they bring their culture here. I'd wear a cowboy hat or boots, but
my dining partners are from Montana and Oklahoma, and they
laugh mercilessly at Californians who wear such things.
