The newest member of my stable, which rolled in yesterday. It’s an unlined black Stetson, No.1 Quality, with a 3.5” brim, not counting the kettle curl (which, due to poor pictures by the seller, I didn’t even know it had), and a 6-ply cord band. The crown would be 6” open, and, as creased, is 4” at the front and 5.5” at the sides. It has a cattleman’s crease, with a VERY slight downward slope, not really enough to call it a Gus, and slight mule kicks front and rear.

From the pristine appearance, and the lack of any “re-crease” lines, I’m pretty certain this was its original, and only, shape. It was definitely a dress hat, not a workingman’s western, and I'm estimating it dates from the early 1940s.

Very nice, Mark! Does it have the original sweatband? Would love to see it and any labels If you get a chance!

First post on this forum, but have been following for a while. This is a modern make Open Road Royal Deluxe. Haven’t worn westerns in a few years as I have been living in London for the past few years and haven’t felt fully confident to wear big western hats here (grew up in Kansas farmlands so always used to wear Resistols). Figured shorter brim open road would be a good place to dive back in. Really like the style so far so I may add a vintage one soon if I can!

For what little it may be worth, were I in the UK, I would definitely be wearing my Akubra Territory.
My next hat will likely be an Akubra, I’ve never worn them before but always hear good things! Probably will get a Campdraft though as I’m sticking to shorter brims while in London. When I’m back out in the country in Kansas I’ll go back to the bigger brims. The territory looks nice for open space though for sure

Normally I’m not a fan of artificially aged hats (y’all know the ones I mean) but this one I’m justifying because A, I did it exclusively for a True Grit (2010) costume, not coachella. And B, it was a cheap, low quality crushable wool Stetson that I wasn’t really going to wear ever.
Think I managed to get it pretty close to the film prop and I didn’t pay anyone in California $1000 for a bit of dirt and flame burns
