The newest member of my stable, which rolled in yesterday. It’s an unlined black Stetson, No.1 Quality, with a 3.5” brim, not counting the kettle curl (which, due to poor pictures by the seller, I didn’t even know it had), and a 6-ply cord band. The crown would be 6” open, and, as creased, is 4” at the front and 5.5” at the sides. It has a cattleman’s crease, with a VERY slight downward slope, not really enough to call it a Gus, and slight mule kicks front and rear.
From the pristine appearance, and the lack of any “re-crease” lines, I’m pretty certain this was its original, and only, shape. It was definitely a dress hat, not a workingman’s western, and I'm estimating it dates from the early 1940s.
