When I was a wee lad, even fancy establishments in big cities still had spittoons, which were more politely called cuspidors.
I’ve seen them in old time pool halls & card parlors. When I was a kid there was a turtle spittoon in the barbershop but I never saw anyone use it.

One of my earliest memories is of my grandfather grabbing me to stop me from a close inspection of the first spittoon I had ever seen.

It was in a hotel in downtown Chicago, probably in the late 1930’s.

No clue which hotel, when, or why we were there. As I said, I was pretty little, but obviously old enough to remember, so I had to be at least three.
