Dorer Bar 50 with a Wyoming prison made hitched horse hair band. I bought this hat in 2016. This was the original -50 by Dorer as sold thru Orvis. The -50 was touted by Butch as their working cowboy hat, made with a 50/50 blend of European hare and beaver. The sweat is cow leather with the braided leather sweat seam, as all their hats were at the time. Retail $500. I don’t know if Dorer is still making hats. The last proof I saw was a 2017 FB post when a re-launch of the new and improved -50 was advertised. A 100% beaver hat with a roan sweat, available in brown and black with a price increase. I can’t remember for sure but I think the original was only sold in natural.

I did see one just like mine listed on the bay not long ago as a 100% beaver hat with a roan sweat. So, as always, buyer beware.

My Rand 8x wide brim is starting to get a bit floppy. What's a good way to stiffen up the brim?
Does hat stiffener work? or spray shellac?
am open to ideas. I don't want it cardboard stiff like a western store hat though .

I’m no hatter and make no claims as such but I’ve used this on both felt and straw. I’ve no experience with any other products such as hat stiffeners and shellac flakes that some hatter use. This did not change the color at all. Mixture: 10-1 alcohol to shellac and I applied with a brush. Mix it thin and go slow. You can add subsequent coats to reach the level of stiffness you want. I have used hair spray back in the day. Always used the cheapest, odorless one I could find.

This just arrived today. Not my style or size, but it’s already getting a bit of interest (I listed it on eBay). Stetson 30X El Patron in 7 3/8 (59cm) regular oval.

I do like the quality of the leather sweatband and the hand is very pleasant, but for me it’s the embroidered liner that really does it. I wish this was an available option on more of their hats.

This works very well to stiffen up felt.
Several light coats have worked on my hats.
As always try it out on a beater hat to see if you can get the results you want.

Thanks for the suggestions on stiffening products. I ended up getting a bottle of Kahl Hat Stiffener. And it works great! Also got a reply from the folks at Rand, in response to asking them what they suggested, and they recommended the same product. I gave the hat 3 applications with proper drying time between and it's just right.
