Hard to fault that one, looks great!

3x6 7x is quickly growing on me. I was immediately intimidated with this proper western lid, but after I fixed the crease and flattened the brim a touch, it’s starting to feel right.

Still wavy with the brim but I’ll be working with it a little more.

Resistol Beaver 100: It’s been a long time since a non-custom hat has made me smile this much.

Fun project from start to finish. A Lone Star Dude by Manny Gammage in Austin Texas, the style was one Manny originally made for Willie Nelson and 7 of his touring crew based an old style cowboy hat similar to a Topeka crease. During the 1970's this hat was called the 'Lone Star Dude' or LSD for short. Also, similar in style to the “Gus” which came much later. According to the T H website Manny also made the original 'Gus' hat for Duvall that he wore in the movie.

The original LSD hats sported a thick leather hatband that was punched and hand painted with the Lone Star beer logo then had custom shotgun shell Conchos added, Willies hat also hat is initials carved into the leather band. Texas Hatters had an agreement with Lone Star beer at the time and cases of beer were delivered weekly to his Austin shop and to all the local events where Willie was playing.

I found this old Lone Star Dude in rough condition and wanted to bring it back to original glory. So, I had Texas Hatters build me an original hatband including a new hand painted Lone Star logo & shotgun shell Conchos. They were happy to recreate it as they had not done one in a couple decades. There is a nice dress band underneath so I can remove the leather Lone star one as needed.

The Lone Star Dude stands a generous 6.5" tall with 3.5" curled brim. Some random moth bites add charm to this aged piece of Texas history. My particular hat has the name of Ace Parker is in the hatband. Turns out Ace Parker was a baseball and football player and coach and Hall of Famer who died a few years back at the age of 101. This was verified by Joella at Texas Hatters who went back through her records and verified it for me.

Great post from start to finish, Ken and the history with documentation you just provided is what keeps me hanging around this place. Not much better than Hat History! Fantastic job on the hat band re-creation. That's going to be fun to wear.
Thanks, this was such a fun project. Probably would not have happened if Texas Hatters wasn't just a 45 min drive away. ;)

Here's a great article about Manny and Texas Hatters from the Washington Post way back in 1978.

The jist of it is Manny made hats that caused bar fights. He once received a letter that said: "Dear Manny, I'm a big, ugly, tattooed sunbitch with 26 years in the Army and I'm queer for hats. I want a hat for me that will scare women and children and start fights in Wyoming bars."

Manny Gammage, a 40-year-old Texas hat maker, knew what the man needed. Custom requests are nothing new. Gammage had a special Haggar the Horrible hat (with real sheepskin and horns) for actor George Kennedy. George Wallace's Hi-roller, an exclusive Gammage creation, had just the shade of silver belly color the governor had ordered. And because Burt Reynolds requested a new style whisky-colored hat, Gammage made it and then added the new style to his line of hats, calling the new hats "Burt."

"If you can imagine it," says Gammage, "I can make it."

So for the man from Washington, Gammage cut, trimmed, blocked, stained and molded a brown derby-styled hat with a tooled leather band, topping it with silver-and-turquoise inlay. Guaranteed to cause trouble.

"That man isn't just making hats," says Kinky Friedman, a tall, black-haired musician whose "Lone Star Dude" hat bears a band of gold conchos and a feather from Borneo. "When he puts a hat on your head he's giving you personality. And though he's slow as a Jewish tailor, you can bet by the time you walked out of his shop that he's giving you just the right hat."

Great post Ken! Glad you brought that hat back to its original condition and I enjoyed the history research, especially the confirmation on Ace Parker.
