Fun project from start to finish. A Lone Star Dude by Manny Gammage in Austin Texas, the style was one Manny originally made for Willie Nelson and 7 of his touring crew based an old style cowboy hat similar to a Topeka crease. During the 1970's this hat was called the 'Lone Star Dude' or LSD for short. Also, similar in style to the “Gus” which came much later. According to the T H website Manny also made the original 'Gus' hat for Duvall that he wore in the movie.

The original LSD hats sported a thick leather hatband that was punched and hand painted with the Lone Star beer logo then had custom shotgun shell Conchos added, Willies hat also hat is initials carved into the leather band. Texas Hatters had an agreement with Lone Star beer at the time and cases of beer were delivered weekly to his Austin shop and to all the local events where Willie was playing.

I found this old Lone Star Dude in rough condition and wanted to bring it back to original glory. So, I had Texas Hatters build me an original hatband including a new hand painted Lone Star logo & shotgun shell Conchos. They were happy to recreate it as they had not done one in a couple decades. There is a nice dress band underneath so I can remove the leather Lone star one as needed.

The Lone Star Dude stands a generous 6.5" tall with 3.5" curled brim. Some random moth bites add charm to this aged piece of Texas history. My particular hat has the name of Ace Parker is in the hatband. Turns out Ace Parker was a baseball and football player and coach and Hall of Famer who died a few years back at the age of 101. This was verified by Joella at Texas Hatters who went back through her records and verified it for me.

Very nice. I was just a teenager when I saw the ads for the Lone Star Dude hat in Texas Monthly magazine. I just had to have one, but there was no way I could afford the price. If I remember correctly, the original crease was called a "pull-tab" crease. Some of you might remember the pull-tab was a separate piece with a ring that you removed from the top of a beer can. The Lone Star Dude was made when Texas Hatters was located on South Lamar Blvd. in Austin. After a few moves, they are now located in the BBQ capital of the world, Lockhart, Texas.

Again, a great piece. As you can barely see in the last photo, "Red River" is a brand name of the Neiman Marcus stores; they used to sell various articles of western-style clothing bearing the "Red River" brand. Curious that they chose the "Churchill" brand for this hat; if I recall correctly, Churchill was bought by Resistol.

You're correct. This was one ugly hat when I got it. David @ Texas Hatters fixed it up and modeled it after the Lone Star Dude. It's my mini-dude because it is 1/4" lower in the crown. There are some earlier photos in this thread that show the nasty condition it used to be in. ;)

Churchill was created by Byer Rolnick and sold exclusively through Neiman Marcus at one time.

Stunning just stunning.

Such a great color for a hat. Especially one with near perfect dimensions.
Thank you guys, much appreciated. The 15X is definitely a thin dress weight felt. The color is probably a bit more Taupe than shown in outdoor pics. Incandescent lighting can sometimes give it a green undertone which I'm not fond of, but it's a great hat.
