I don't know anyone that has any. They sold mostly wool felts but did offer fur felt versions of most of their hats. The fur felt prices are consistent with many of the lower price point hats of the time like Champ or Marathon of the same or similar quality. I have catalogs and booklets from the era that show, then like now...the BEST selling hats were the wool bodies.... while we here often snub or overlook such hats....they were and are the mainstay of the hat industry. All one needs to do is visit many a men's store which is selling Scala and Stetson wool felt and fabric with few if any fur felt options......and visit Gander Mountain or Bass pro and see the wool fedoras there.

Stetson 5X long hair

New to me. Guessing mid-1960s through mid-1970s. The top 3/4 of crown is very soft and then transitions to being very stiff, as is the brim. I’m still playing with the shape and there is a lot of crown to work with.

Here's my latest refurb project. This is a '50s era Stetson No.1 Quality Western that I refurbished and sized up from its original 6 5/8 to my 7 1/4 hat size. Thanks to a fellow Lounger who gifted this hat to me, this is my first No.1 Stetson. After handling this hat I now know why you guys like these vintage No.1s so much. The felt on this hat's amazing. I have more in the Conversion Corral. I styled this hat similar to some of the ones I remember seeing in T.V. Western serials from the 1950s and '60s.

Thank you Bowen. I had an idea to reuse the original sweat and it looked like it was going to work, and it would have if it weren't for the fabric material where reed went didn't start tearing. I spliced a piece of sweat of the same color and width onto the original. It almost worked. It wouldn't have been the prettiest but I didn't care. I wanted the original sweat in the hat since it was in such good shape. Anyway, I ended up putting a new sweat in the hat after all.

It was simple. I sprinkled some magic dust on it.
