I don't know the movie ... But that makes sense.

A documentary style film on Buck Brannaman, the guy that inspired Horse Whisperer & helped Robert Redford on the set....
Buck's hat has a thin ribbon = looked like a wide brim Open Road with a telescope crease.

I'd agree. Elko= kind of a gambler-like telescoped crown with a very wide cup and snap bound brim, yes? Falls into the broader vaquero/buckaroo category, I believe.

I've watched it twice, really super-impressed with the horsemanship and character captured in it, but I know nothing about horses and am a poor judge, you'll have to watch it for yourself. ( I might be gullible). The hat Buck wears most of the time is not too impressive to me, vaquero style but it looks like one of those heavy straws or maybe a plastic imitation straw, maybe the ruggedness of that type hat won out over beauty. Some of the scenes show Buck from earlier in his career, maybe 1980s, and at least one of those hats was interesting - a chocolate brown with bound edge and a ribbon maybe 3/4 in to an inch wide, more of a gus crease, but that is only shown very briefly. Most of the hats I saw looked like standard cowboy hats w/cattleman crease and 4in brims. Maybe I'm just seeing it wrong, but I didn't think Buck was wearing a fur felt, I thought it was a straw.

Ok, that is the brown hat that I thought I was talking about, a pic is much better than my memory. In the 2nd picture - definitely looks like an OR in that picture, but the hat he was wearing in the more current seminars seemed to be a straw version of that hat, almost a milan style of straw imitation. Maybe my memory is just as bad on that hat as it was on the brown hat, as that ribbon could not be more than about 3/4 in wide.

Ah Jeez, the Open Road shape is starting to get to me. On the other had, I dislike Silverbelly as a hat color. Now I have to save up for a custom one in a color I actually like, like Silver Mist or Gray, or ...

Now, I wonder why I thought Buck's hat was a straw. Maybe it was his daughter's hat that was a straw, and I mistakenly transferred that texture to Buck's hat, or did my eyes deceive me on both? Well, it airs again tomorrow afternoon, will get a chance to look again.

Just watched it again, and now it is so much clearer that I focused on that one issue. 99% of the time he is in that OR, only in one scene near the end, packing up to transit from one stop to another, did I see him in the straw. Daughter's hat was the straw, and Buck's straw was almost identical to his daughter's hat, and both of those were almost identical to the OR, all three in the same shape.

Reminded me that I'd never posted any photos of my one and only western hat. It's a Resistol BR Beaver 35 and despite being a pretty cool hat, it spends its time hanging on my wall. Still might be useful if I ever start a career as a country singer or rodeo rider - both somewhat unlikely, I suspect.

On ePrey, last night, I bought a sterling silver decorative hat band with inset turquoise stones.

I have never seen one, but then, I'm new to this western hat scene. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with these, and especially any advice for affixing it to a hat. I assume it would be tacked as normally done, but note that the decorative insert has buckles on BOTH ends, probably necessitating that this section be tacked as well.

Is there a way to have open/close loops on the hat(s) so that I could move it to another hat?

Also, is it so rigid that it needs to be bent into my long oval shape, or is the sterling soft enough to mould its own shape?

Finally, I'll judge when I see it if I want to polish it or not, but if it winds up an a light hat, I assume tarnish will tarnish the hat too.

Any guidance, thoughts? Thanks and I'll post decent pics once in hand and on hat.
