Thanks for the comments and research, Jack! I have seen this #406 on the lounge in a wide variety of felts, almost all of which are older than mine I believe. I’ll have to look into the spot again, because based on the what you’ve described it was very similar reaction. Spot on both sides of brim showed up in photos, on top it got much darker after the distilled water. I was all set on my patch job but certainly don’t want the damage to continue.

Ross, this is your hat in the pic. I believe it is a Stetson San Fran. If you look thru the catalogs (1930's) you can find them. They were No.1Q's with 7" crowns, 1-3/4"(?) ribbon, raw edge brim. For my own info I made note of your block #406.

Mine is a black 1920's-1930's Stetson Tommy Grimes with the 2" ribbon & brim binding, No.1Q with block #1188. I'm working on creasing it back original with the deep center crease & rounded top look. Now that the weather is turning cooler & I don't mind putting hot steam in the house I'll get that done.

If you look thru the older catalogs you can quickly separate the wheat from the chaff by the number of models with 7" crowns. I'm sure your's is a San Fran & a great find worthy of recovery.

I'm wondering if the gooey spot on your hat is tree sap? Tree sap will dissolve anything over time & some types of trees are worse than others. When the sap completely dissipates it can turn to black mold & keep eating away. Paint stores usually have a spirit that will kill & remove sap & mold but it will also remove the felt that is on the verge of being dissolved. But you need to stop the process.

It’s a bit hard to tell especially in the picture but the block on my BRE almost looks like they wrote 406 and then replaced the 6 with a 5

The dimensions and blocking appear very similar.

With the 7” crown listed I’d say it’s a good bet on 406. Several are found in the Pre 1940’s Western thread predominantly in various Nutria grades but also very similar looking No. 1’s

Yeah I do believe it is 406, this one is a clear nutria. Justin the previous owner dated it around 1910 but I’m not sure how he arrived there.

Little chilly this morning. New hat it taking on a good shape. I really appreciate it when all 6 critters, tails on fire, stampede by me when I am trying to take a photo :confused:I know they aren't shy so they must really dislike the new hat  Obviously no taste in riders or hats!

A more typical photo op.

Hi Yahoody
I'm guessing 6 inch or better open crown on both, with 5 inch brims? I work with a 6'4" dude who could wear that size fine. Did I guess right? You're also on CASCity right?
Thx

It doesn't get any better than that! It deserves respect & I know you will give it just that.

Thanks Jack, I do cherish it. I would like to look into actually having the original sweatband restored. Has anyone heard of someone doing this? Basically the leather still has some life in it but the natural reed is toast and protruding from the little loop they usually sit in which is torn and broken in a few spots. It's also just hanging onto the hat in a few spots as most of the needlework is gone.

Easy to just buy a new nice leather sweat and hand sew it in. I have bough a couple dozen pre sewn to my size from a dealer on Ebay. He does nice work.

Hey Mike,
I do post at the CAS forums on occasion :) Black hat is a 5" brim and a 5.5" crown. New ash colored one is a store bought, 4.5" brim and a 6" crown. The store mis-shipped me. It was suppose to be a 5" brim and a 6" crown. The correct hat should be here Tuesday:D Hat in my avatar is a round dome, 5" open crown and a 5" brim. So the crown looks shorter than it is. I'm 6'1" 200#. Once you start wearing 6" and 7 " brims in the straw hats and felt sombreros a 5" brim seems tiny. But a 4.5" brim makes a lot more sense if you are getting in and out of a truck. As does a crown under 6".

Both sides of the family homesteaded in Norman and Duncan in the land rush days. So suspect you know why I typically wear open crown hats ;)

Yes I do. I went to a Wichita Wranglers baseball game in July, I put sun block on the neck, but the back of both ears peeled off. Now I have hats.
