Just got this Stetson Austral, their rebranded BotP last week. I haven't made up my mind on it yet, but it's starting to grow on me. The workmanship is decent and the buffalo fur/wool felt seems pretty good, and it's stiffened nicely. I reshaped the brim a smidge and don't know as I plan to do much more with it.

As I don't really see it being an everyday hat think it will work out fine. Time will tell.

ETA: The site I purchased it from (and most others I saw) listed it as having a leather sweatband but it's faux leather. It's comfortable so far but we'll see how that goes on a hot day shooting.

Thanks guys. I've been watching for a blue western for a while, I passed on one a year or so ago and was a little cross with myself.

Joao, here is the tag:

Cheers! David

I'm just 90 miles north of Houston. See a lot of hats with Dons in the sweatband. Must've been quite the spot not sure if it's still around

Some very nice hats posted gents! Been away for awhile and last I remember we were talking about crown heights and brim widths. It occurs to me that without a reference as to the curl of the brim I can't get the jest of it right as to what brim width you gents really like. For instance here's a pic of a hat off ebay that if the link works you'll see has a almost flat brim with very little roll to the fenders and a fair amount of what I call rocker or dip to the brim.

Now picture the same hat with the fenders rolled up quite a bit and you can see that the overall width of the hat would be narrower, see what I mean? So tell me about brim width and what width hat you prefer.

BTW I have seen posted here what I call rocker or dip as being a "packer" hat. Been out in the western states for years and have done my share of horse packing and have not heard of this at all. Boots called packers boots but that's it. Is it a regional term or enlighten me.

Latigo

Only time I've seen "packer" applied to a hat is the crease that looks like a "Gus," or "Tom Horn" crease, but with a rectangular, almost brick-shaped center dent.

My Latest ebay find arrived today: Resistol Las Vegas 4x Beaver in Granite. Needs a good brushing and cleaning. I've been looking for a nice grey. I really like all the earth tones. This one does seem to have a touch of blue tint to it. Oh well. just have to keep looking for that perfect grey....if I don't go broke buying hats...

Hoping to get the picture to display without having to click a link, hope this works. How do you edit a post here?

I think granite have a tint of blue in it. If you want a grey hat search for the color Pellet. Old Resistol color number is 012.

Thanks Joao! Great info on the color and code. Now I know what to look for. I have made mistakes in the past with the photos on ebay, the last hat before this one looked light brown in all the photos and turned out to be brownish forest green! Live and learn to ask the seller.......

OK gents, lest you might think that old Latigo is suffering a case of buyers remorse or...worse...stupidity... Let me say that for the money I paid for both hats was quite a deal. The brownish forest green is really kind of different in changing light, it's brown in the sunlight and in the shade you can see that it has a greenish tint, it's kind of growing on me. BTW it's a vintage American Hat Company 3x and it's in great shape. The Resistol Las Vegas is not the perfect grey I am looking for but I do like it a lot just the color it is, it' a keeper! I kind of knew it might have a blue tint to it as I had been looking at some newer models in that color, the Resistol Quicksilver which are even darker and they have a glued on hat band which I really don't like at all. This is an older model Las Vegas and it looked better to me. It's in great shape to and should clean up nice. The hat band on it came with it and it's nice too. I do have the perfect excuse to keep on looking for that grey.......

@Stringmaster Those are some pretty nice ties and I like the musical theme too. I take it from your handle you play stringed instruments? Banjo, Guitar? I'm betting you're in a band or have your own?

Latgio
I play guitar and steel guitar (nonpedal)--"Stringmaster" is a steel guitar model made by Fender from the 50's and is the origin of my "handle" (not that I'm a master lol). I play steel with The Hotshot Drifters hence the customization on the Col Saunders tie. I also play guitar in a couple of Blues bands but won't likely be wearing these ties to those gigs :)

Very nice! I've been playing guitar for a few years just as a hobby. I'm getting to the point of really learning my way around the fret board, where I don't have to think about it too much, just try to play what's in my head and play mostly finger picking style. I have a few guitars, Alvarez, Yamaha, and 2 old made in Japan, a Morris and a Crown (Sada Yari) vintage from the 60's that's my favorite.

Yes I know. I have 2 Resistol Stagecoach in Pellet color. In one picture there seems to have a difference but on the other it's the same.

@Joao You're right, they look a whole shade different from each other in that one picture. Different lighting, cameras, angles, monitors, if a flash was used it's endless!

All we can do is be careful and ask if we aren't sure. But you know sometimes it's a pleasant surprise when we see them in person and really like them. I've had a few. You think to yourself, man, I must be living right! Thanks again..

In felt is normal for a little color deviation. Hard to make all with the same strength in some colors.
