Waxed canvas ... how does it wear?

You can find plenty of home recipes for re-proofing your clothes. I don't have much experience with this, but there should be plenty of reviews to go along with the experimenting. Rather than spending the bank on the likes of Filson and Barbour, you can make your own, and then you can play with the recipe to tailor it to your needs. There are also other companies making fabric wax, like Otter Wax.

here's one recipe I have bookmarked. I might have found it on this forum, but I'm not sure.

I have a beautiul Barbour Ashby. Not sure if it's a J. Crew exclusive, but they did sell the model. It's a slim fit version of the Bedale and fits/looks spectacular, but I no longer wear it as it is pretty clammy. I walk across campus, take it off and am perspiring like crazy. Too bad as I damn sure look like Daniel Craig wearing it!

if you just want the "look" and not the property, and plan to DIY, you can use painting matte varnish, I did that to get a coated look on jeans, can mix in come color if you want to create effect (patina), I learned it from youtube vids. I wash these jeans multiple times no problem and once dry it never get sticky again, but it does not waterproof, purely just for look, it get stiff and show crack patterns on creases over time like wax and look hazy, while on other areas you frequently lean against will develop shiny polished look patina.

Ive had a few Barbour wax jackets. They are certainly waterproof and good for walking through bushes but they are really just practical things for folk that permanently keep a pair of wellies in the back of their estate car.

They also have a fairly unique smell. I think they take a little bit of wearing to break them in but the ones I had were fairly shapeless things and were for going fishing in. They are not very warm either so they are always bought a size bigger so you can layer up under them.

You can probably get a far more practical waterproof coat for the sort of money youre going to shell out on a Barbour or Belstaff, but if you want to fit in with the horsey set you have to have them. The more beaten up and mouldy looking they are, the better.

My old neighbour used to race motorbikes and he said they quite often had the fitted waterproofs for biking but he hated them as they'd always leak at high speed

I like wax jackets but as fashion things? no.

Also, don't forget to empty the maggots out your pocket after youve been fishing.....

The Supply Jacket by Rogue Territory is a great wax jacket, they do two versions, with and without a liner.
It's quite expensive.

I've seen a few replicas on Aliexpress if you want the cheaper alternative.

those look alright as jackets too. The county set still won't stray far from their Barbour uniforms

I have both the unlined and now have the blanket lined version brand new in the classifieds. I unfortunately got the size wrong on the lined version, but the unlined is an incredible jacket. One of my favorites.

how did you get the size wrong? Did you intentionally size up thinking it might be needed?

Yes. I have a size L in the unlined and it fits snug and fitted. Stag Provisions recommends to size up in the Supply jackets due to the slim fitting nature, so I thought that since this had a liner I would need the XL. Unfortunately, it just is too big for how I like to wear my jackets. Namely, the bottom hem and length. It's not bad, but I have better fitting jackets that I would never reach for the lined version. That's why I'm selling it.

This is what a well worn rgt looks like.

Some would say "sick fades". My gf would say : "Marc, get rid of that dirty old thing "

Yea that's definitely the extreme. It's not something I would do to my jacket, but then again if I were a mechanic working around grease and oil all day maybe I would have one for work and one for play.

These last few posts pushed me over the edge, so I bought a RGT tan supply jacket (unlined) in XL. It’s a great lightweight jacket, and fits me to a T.

I also added a Freenote Cloth Riders jacket in Oak. I love the lining in this one.

Thanks everyone for all the great insight in this thread. Much appreciated :)

Glad you finally pulled the trigger! The Supply jacket is so awesome, one of my favorite jackets, period.

I also really like the Freenote jacket. It's on my list.

The Freenote jacket is fantastic too. So many cool little details in addition to the fabulous lining and satin sleeves. The rivets that hold the front pleats, and the rubber band gussets in the back (yes they actually work) to name a couple.

You'll like it, however it much more of a work inspired jacket … heck I shoveled snow it in the other day:rolleyes:

I think they look cool but the older I get the more I like barbour. Unlike leather jackets you won’t really out grow them if you over indulge in the cookie jar during the winter. Shapeless=comfortable. No more is looking good better than feeling good.

I bought the supply jacket (unlined) when they first came out couple of years ago and have used it well during the milder seasons. It's lightweight and great to pull on and wear. Plenty of nice character also on the waxed canvas already.

Experienced people recommend me the best wax please.
I don't want spots/stains and strong smells.

I own a couple Filson tin cloth jackets and I pretty much never wear them. As Dude mentioned it has a waxy oily hand to it that is kind of annoying. This does get better with time but if you want the jacket to remain water resistant you need to reapply the wax at regular intervals.
The fabric does not breathe at all which means you end up wearing a sauna if you are doing any sort of athletic movement that might cause you to sweat. It is also not terribly good repelling water in my experience. The times that I wore mine out while walking in the rain I found my shoulders were damp after a short time. My 4 oz horsehide LW is practically waterproof by comparison.
I know you posted this a couple year's ago by now, but I was wondering if you still have those Filson tin cloth jackets, and if your'e interested in giving them away or selling them because you say almost never wear them. I'm 20 and recently got into waxed jackets and really like them, but don't necessarily have the budget to afford many name brands at retail value. Anyways, thanks for your time if your'e seeing this!
