Was it a Fedora?

Many decades ago, my Dad owned a gray hat which he wore with his gray suit. As children, we used to play with it. I remember the hat looked much better when its centre top was depressed in the shape of a triangle. You could improve its look also by turning up one side of its brim. The brim was oval, if I recall correctly, and it was definitely not a Top Hat or a cap. It looks similar to a Cowboy hat without a chin strap, but had a much, more refined look.

Was it a Fedora?

I consider most slouch hats with moderatly sized brims and round topped crowns tat can be shaped fedoras.

How big was the brim? As if small would classify as a trilby rather than a fedora. You speculate a cowboy hat.. but would be hesitant as be considered a refined look .. unless many moons ago or in Texas

Interinting you say "much better when its centre top was depressed in the shape of a triangle" .....do you mean it was not 'normally' a triangle shape on the crown - if so i would then think it could be a homburg....

The brim was not as large as a cowboy's hat, relative to the central part (the cone?).

It was definitely not a cowboy hat.

The central part was oval when you look down at it. It probably had a flattish top, but probably (unfortunately this is from memory) the center could be pushed up all the way to turn the central part into a roundish cone.

The sides of the central part was oval; the central top part of the hat was normally a horizontal top. The sides of this horizontal central top was normally depressed to form a triangular base, the center of which was slightly popped up.

Maybe if someone could post images of both Trilby and Homburg side by side, I could identify that hat (I hope).

I would love to acquire that kind of hat because it really looked good as part of a perfect gentleman's grey business suit.

As you menetion depressed normally in the tip in the form of a traingle would possible say fedora or trilby, definately not a homburg.

Basically comes to the size of the brim, as to is trilby or fedora.trilby has smaller one. Both hats can be made to fold the brim upwards on the side, and also the centre 'pop'ed up in the crown.

If you can remember how far you could fold the side up on the hat,- if it covered nearly the whole side of the crown then would be a fedora, a trilby could only be folded part the way.

I think the side brim more likely could be folded up part of the way up the side of the crown. So it was a Trilby. Thanks a lot, Topper. You've been a great help.
