Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

In the LA area there seems to be a lack of advertising JINGLES! In the past both brands and products were advertised on TV and radio with Jingles! It seemed to be one place where the ad man knew that your ability to remember music and words would keep a product in your mind.

Two that I recall very well is the song for Robert Hall the suit store and the other was for Castro Convertibles the sofa people that had those sofas with the fold out beds! If you are old enough you can remember the Slinky song.

Today there are a few jingles but it seems they have faded a lot in advertising!

Most of the jingles I hear these days are for local companies...plumbers, exterminators, etc, which are typically low-budget and make for moments of hilarity. The big commercials typically use popular music to make their pitch.

No, but it's near the Walmart Supercenter on US Highway 12 and South Street. :p

Smells bad inside and out. Sit at the street light on a hot day and you will smell what smells like old vomit. Best to get it to go. Cleaning off the tables consists of wetting one rag once then cleaning off ever table with the same un rinsed rag

I hesitate to mention this one because it is local or regional but does anyone remember Elwy Yost and his Magic Shadows and Saturday Night At The Movies programs?

He was a movie buff from way back and brought great enthusiasm and depth of knowledge to his introductions to old movies. He also traveled to Hollywood and did interviews with old time stars, directors and others in the seventies, eighties and nineties. There must be thousands of hours of interviews gathering dust in the TVOntario archives.

I remember one with Red Buttons who thought Elwy's hat was the funniest thing he had ever seen. And another with Billy Wilder who loved Elwy's name.

The show was seen in southern Ontario and in upstate New York. It ended in 1999. I still miss it.

PS you may have heard of his son screenwriter Graham Yost, best known for writing Speed.

For that matter, the idea of hosted local movie shows in general. I was a big fan of Dana Hersey, host of "The Movie Loft" on Channel 38 out of Boston -- he didn't just read cue cards, he knew about the movies he was showing, and they were always presented "unedited and with limited commercial interruption." I saw tons of early Warner Bros films on his show in the '70s and '80s, and tons of early Paramounts I've never seen shown anywhere else. Hersey disappeared when UPN swallowed Channel 38 in the mid-90s, and I haven't heard anything about him since, but he really ought to be hosting movies on TCM instead of that elderly hipster pill Manckiewicz.

Dana Hersey! I haven't thought about him in decades. According to LinkedIn he's doing voice-over work.

One thing we have in poky old Western Massachusetts which has disappeared in most other places is an honest-to-goodness downtown department store: Wilson's, which has been around since 1882. Once in a while they make the national news by virtue of not being extinct. The local topography and the local inhabitants are both difficult enough that no big box general retail stores have come in, but once one does I suppose that will be the end of them too.

Elwy had the advantage of NO advertising or commercials on his shows. The movies were presented uncut and uninterrupted. Thanks to being presented on a government owned network.

I miss the five and dime back when we lived in Columbus. It's been gone since the 90's.

Oh, come on. It's not that bad if you go to Earl Sheib's on a Sunday. Then they use a clean mop.

No, it's not by Circus World.

Earl Sheib?! I wouldn't let them touch my cars. It has been a long time since I saw one in passing too. Are they still in business? Baraboo KFC? Is that near the Circus World Museum?

That would be the one.

Here's the thing about Earl Scheib--their paint work was decent, it was their prep work beforehand that was lacking. Their "prep staff" was allowed only 30 minutes to prep a car; that includes sanding and masking. They each had a timer near their work station, and when the 30 minutes were up the car was rolled into the paint booth whether it was ready or not. In the late 70s a friend of mine got a very good paint job on his car at Earl Scheib because he "tipped" the prep guy a case of beer in advance so that he'd finish all of the sanding and masking properly. (I say "was" above only because I don't know anyone who's done business with them for decades, so their practices may have changed.)

They're still in business, but it's a safe bet they're charging more than $99.95 these days.

My dad has similar stories. There was an Earl Scheib just a couple blocks from where he grew up.
