35mm theatrical film prints will be one step closer to extinction this fall when Technicolor Inc. ceases all printing operations in the United States. From sometime in October onward, all 35mm movie prints distributed in the US will be printed by Deluxe Labs, which will, in turn, cease all its film distribution operations in the US and shut down all its regional film exchanges. Technicolor, which has been a major force in the development of film printing technology for the past ninety years will take over all physical distribution after the Deluxe depots shut down -- reducing a once-proud, innovative company to little more than a courier service.

This may be gobblety-gook to those outside the movie business, but it's a radical, radical change in the way movies reach your local theatre. For the first time since the days of the Edison Trust over a century ago, film distribution in the United States will be controlled by one company, and it means fewer and fewer prints will be available -- forcing your local house to either go digital or not get important titles it may want to show. Within a few years, there will be no 35mm prints being shown at all, save the occasional retrospective -- and many, many small, local houses which can't afford the cost of the new equipment will be out of business for good.

So support your independant neighborhood theatre, support traditional 35mm film -- while you still have a choice.

Then there's the urban legend of the soon-to-be ex girlfriend/wife selling her boyfriend/husband's Corvette or BMW for $5.00.

Almost as bad, but true: years ago a friend of mine sent me a scan of an ad from the classifieds of The Stars and Stripes (U.S. military newspaper for those stationed overseas). I'm probably paraphrasing, but it read something like "For sale: a motorcycle, large-screen TV, and recliner. Must be gone before husband returns from TDY." (TDY=Temporary Duty--he'd been sent somewhere. Could have been training, deployment, etcetera.)

That was just wrong.

Sadly, we don't have anything like that locally, but yesterday I learned of a theater that opened in 1931 in Ashland, KY, that has ongoing programs. It's now the Paramount Arts Center. They show classic movies, but also plays, musicals, and other productions. According to a flyer we recently received they are going to celebrate their 80th birthday on Sept 10th by having an antique car show, vintage clothing style show, tours, and more. That evening they will recreate the original opening night by showing the same movies at the same cost of seeing them in 1931. Vintage attire is encouraged. I don't have much by way of vintage attire other than hats, but I think that we may have to go make a day of it. It's just under an hour's drive from here.

Your situation is one where I could understand the wronged wife losing her self-control. I was in a similar situation and I definitely did some damage... But anything of value/use was mailed back to him. I'm not sure I would feel the same way if he was just carousing with his buddy, but hey, I've never been there.

"Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?", that's sort of an oxymoron on this forum since we are all dedicated bringing back or commemorating all the things we claim have disappeared. I'm going to take a jab at the intangibles: Chivalry, etiquette, good grooming, penmanship, patriotism(well, at least in the bigger metro areas), and a good command of the English language...and last...big bands a la Count Basie, Benny Goodman etc.

I am not like that at all. Even when my first husband cheated on me, I packed up all his stuff nicely and had it delivered to his mother's house. Not one thing was destroyed.

Here in the Southern California area one of the revenge of the girlfriend scemes is to take all of your BF / fiancce / husbands clothes in the car and go for a 100 mile drive dropping a piece of his clothes out here and there while on the freeway.

another for the BF revenge is to go to his place while he is away and call the number for time in Tokyo Japan or other places suitably extotic and far off and leave the phone off the hook until he returns. Back in the day the long distance overseas rates were also exotic. the phone bill could be in the thousands back when the dolar was worth something.

See.... the thing I think y'all missed is that I dropped the stuff off at his mother's house. He had to explain to her why his stuff was there and why he was moving back in. She was NOT happy. That in itself was enough revenge for me and I didn't have to destroy anything...... Oh and did I mention how much she loved me??

Couldn't agree more on all counts. I lack in the penmanship department. I have had all sorts of schooling and should be pretty good at sentence structure and writing nice flowing, coherent stories, but I've let that skill stagnate after spending years on automotive forums helping mouthbreathers fix this or do that. When I get back in school next year, I hope I can pick it right back up again.
