My wife has a little diary that her great aunt kept on their first trip to Florida in the mid '30s. One of the things she mentioned was that they ate really well for a quarter a meal, but Harry wanted to splurge a couple of times and he'd spent 40 cents.35-cent dinner.

That actually sounds pretty tasty.Egg sandwiches were a major fast-food item in the early 20th century. The New England favorite was called a "trilby," made up of a fried egg and a thick slice of onion served on a bulkie roll and slathered in ketchup. A house specialty at the Waldorf Lunch cafeteria chain.
