As for taper, my Stetson Chatham (I mentioned this on another thread too) did not taper at all when I was caught in a downpour a few days ago. Considering that modern Stetson is heavily criticised by some (me too until I saw the evidence that my Chatham is actually quite good). This shows that modern hats can still be good, even if they are not as good as vintage ones.

As I said early in this thread, we're in the realm of the subjective.

This is purely anecdotal, so I suppose that makes it worth about what it cost you, but it seems there's a variance in quality not only within a modern hat manufacturer's overall production, but also from example to example of a particular model. Maybe it's the nature of hats that they're kinda prone to inconsistency. Greater uniformity might be achieved by more stringent manufacturing controls, I'd imagine, but there are still so many factors that getting them all close to identical might be kinda tough.

I was lucky then to get a good hat, though some manufacuters are probably more consitant in providing more good quality hats than others are. I could imagine that the average Fed IV (from what I have heard) is of good quality, though it is possible that there are a few not so good ones out there. In the end it comes down to quality control. My Chatham has a label inside the sweatband saying that it was checked for quality, so maybe my hat was the one of how ever many that got checked (or do all Stetsons have this label under the sweatband?).

You'll be walk'n home with your tail between your legs and folks will be look'n at you and just shak'n their heads and mumbling, "that poor man looks like he's been Squatter Whipped." :whip: :whistling
