@tmitchell59 any idea about the maker?

I am not sure about what jackets I have from this era with the gussets.

The overall jacket style does not look familiar. Very simple design other than the gussets. The lack of belt loops or other adjustment at the hem is interesting and may be a clue. Has the look of a front zip Police jacket with the zipped front pockets, buttoned cuffs, short length.

The Sunrise Talon would be appropriate for the late 30s early 40s.

omg!!! Thanks so much for sharing these links. I'm downloading now. When I downloaded the Sears catalog pages I just had time to do the outerwear section. This is going to be an eye opener for sure.

When members, like you and many others share, makes this the best forum. It has always been my aim to share the pages as a resource to define the development of the leather jacket. These resources aid my research in many ways and are plain entertaining.

another member posted one page from a Sears special catalog I had not seen. This simple page answered many questions on the Sears branded jackets.

Amazing to look through and glimpse the past and what it says.

I've gotten several ideas about jackets from a quick review. Capeskin comes up during the war years often. I'm thinking a lack of other materials. I see very few capeskin jackets from this time. Given Capes fragility I assume few survived.

I am quite certain that old catalogues are still available but only on microfiche and only on archive in the bigger libraries. I remember reading vintage Playboy magazines on microfiche when I was a kid. Don't ask.
It's more than a day's work just to re-scan the microfiche images to digital. And hence I believe that's why there isn't a lot of it out there. Just no money in it. Next time I spend a bit longer time in the major hubs I will see if I can get into this a bit more. To be fair, not all vintage Playboys got the digital treatment. I doubt the pages selling jackets or furniture will get more traction.

Suppose I’m officially spamming the board with this jacket now. If you’ve seen any of my posts over the past couple years then you know this one is special to me. I have long wanted an Arcaidia. Seemed impossible. Terry sent me images of the original Campus jacket he sent to JC and I in turn had 5 Star build me two. Nice enough jackets but not quite there. To find an original, the actual jacket the Arcaidia is based on, in my size seems almost like a miracle. I’ve had one before but it was nowhere near this nice or as robust. This is a special jacket.

Not too many vintage pieces will oblige this crowd pleasing trick:

It’s quite remarkable and I am in love.

I don’t think it is, seems way to big but I can find no evidence of it being replaced. It was meticulously well done. Both sides exterior and interior are stitch hole perfect. Which seems impossible but so does a # 8 serval on a 50’s jacket.

Those "big" zippers are called just that in the Sears catalog around 1957. That is the first use on civilian jackets I have found.

This is from the 57 Sears catalog, shows a paper clip style zipper and the reference to "big" zipper.

Campus probably used different suppliers through the years like most other brands who did not produce. Very different results could come with this process.

here is a link to JC's jacket. It has a very distinct mid 40s Talon zipper. It is pictured in the album. The difference in age could be a factor in more than the zipper choice, lining material and choice of hide. Again, the JC jacket does not have a Campus label. Maybe it is a different maker.
