Vintage Makeup Favorites

I was in Sephora over the weekend, and saw a cream blush by Nars called Cactus Flower. I didn't buy it only because I had a heaping basket full of stuff I really wanted already, but I am anxious to try it out. It's a rather bright color, but is a vintage looking coral. Plus I know with a cream I can adjust its intensity. I'll report back when I get some

I noticed that Vermont Country Store has some cream rouge. Has anyone tried that? I am tempted to get it, it wasn't expensive but they don't show the colors, just give the names. I think you get 2 of them for the price.

Help!!

Good morning ladies! Little bit of back story here. I'm a portrait photographer and I'm looking to branch out and do a bit of retro style photography (both B&W and color) and I've been watching this thread in hopes of getting some useful info. Useful is and understatement! I've learned more than a guy should ever know about makeup! lol j/k My question is this, I'd like to purchase a few of the different products you've mentioned and sworn by but I really don't know the first place to start looking for them! MAC seems to be a brand that is mentioned the most. Where is it available? Would this be a Walmart/Kmart deal or is this closer to Dillards and Kaufmans? I'm really out of my element here!

I do want to learn the basics on how to apply it, so in a pinch I can do a job that will suffice. As for hair I luck out because my girlfriends sister is a cosmotologist and her mom is a district manager for Mastercuts! Thank God for small favors!

Anywho, I don't suppose that in your spare time you lovely ladies would be able to recommend where to buy some of this stuff and any references that might help out! Thanks so much!

MAC can be purchased online (www.maccosmetics.com), at some Dillard?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s/Nordstrom's, and at their own stores. It's not the cheapest brand, though it's not the most expensive, either.

It'll give you a basic color and application guide that you can take with you to the store.

Most of the cosmetics mentioned here are department store brands; however, you can pick up most staples at Target or Kmart. You might want to start with a few more inexpensive items while you are working on your technique Aside from my fave MAC lipsticks, I tend to stick with a lot of drugstore items (mascara especially) for everyday use and the looks turn out fine.

Arched brows?
I have the most difficult time putting an arch in my brow.I love the look of a high arch,but can't seem to duplicate it myself.
I've noticed alot of vintage minded gals wear perfectly arched brows,so what's the secret?
Stencils?Powder versus pencil?Should brows contrast or match haircolor?

I went to have my eyebrows waxed a few months back and took pics of old Hollywood stars and said I want my eyebrows to look like theirs. Now all I have to do plucking in the mornings as little eyebrow hairs start popping through. The waxing helped me to get the shape going...I just have to maintain it now (which is kinda hard if you don't stay on top of it).

I have very light blonde eyebrows so I can get away without major plucking--but plucking a nice arch makes it easier when I fill my brows in each morning.

I basically pluck until I achieve the desired arch, but one tip that I have heard is to take a white eye pencil and draw around your brow to create that perfect shape. Then pluck all of the hairs in the white areas. You can also use a pencil to draw in that perfect brow and pluck all of the hairs that fall outside of it.

I usually prefer pencil (just a cheap Cover Girl pencil in light brown; they have a nice honey brown that would be good for redheads), but powder and wax (found at the drugstore again) applied with an angled brush works well too. Pencil would be the authentic choice, but many girls find powder easier to work with. I actually find pencil to be a little more precise, but you have to apply it using short, light strokes to avoid a hard line. Whatever method I use, I top it with a light dusting of powder to soften and set.

Also, filling in your brows, no matter how dark or thick they naturally are, gives the face a very polished, vintage look. When I help friends with their makeup, I always make sure to do their brows!

This is what I did. But you really only have to do it once. Once you have it plucked it will be easier to maintain. My brows are relatively light and I have to fill them to get them to look appropriately vintage. I had been using a brown shadow, but recently switched to a pencil because it looks more vintage than powder. You can make the edges a little sharper with the pencil, and I find I have more control on filling. I use Maybeline brow pencil in Auburn and it coordinates perfectly with my red hair. It has just the right amount of red in the brown. I use the double package set of red pencils with red caps because that it what my Grandmother always used and I am sentimental that way.

While we're on the subject of colors, do you have a favorite nailpolish brand or color? I had been using Maybelline in Cherry Rain untill it got too thick. Now I am using Revlon #680 Revlon Red. There seem to be fewer reds that are just a creme and not mettalic or too glittery.

My favourite nail polish brand is OPI. They have quite a few nice reds. The colour I use the most is called New York Apple.

I have a question too about nail polish colours. Emerald green was a popular colour in the 1930's, and before the recent Gatsby picnic I decided I wanted emerald green nail polish to go with my outfit. I've since found that emerald green nail polish is impossible to find! I've tried everywhere I can think of. Anyone have any suggestions?

Jitterbugdoll, Now I'm in love with those wide brim hats for a 40's look! Great pics!

I have a bit of misshapen eyebrows, to where they're so thin in the center that there's only a few hairs. Even in elementary school my classmates would ask if I plucked them! I cannot establish an arch for the life of me, and I even went to a pricey place in LA and they couldn't figure it out. But I use Benefit's Eye Zing and that helps even em out a bit. I used to use a pencil, but it left them clumpy. I like the brush better.

And I'm with you gals on OPI. I am always working with my hands banging around scissors and pins, working with seam rippers (a gal's best friend while sewing), so polish chips so easily for me. But OPI seems to stay set longer than the others I've tried.

I've seen it around Christmas time. Where do you find OPI polish?? I have never heard of it.

Ms. Casino, I've never heard of Ricky's. Do you know if they have a website? I have tried one Halloween store in the area, but the only green they had was glittery. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Cherry Red, The Sally's near me doesn't carry it, so you might want to call first. However, most of the other beauty supply stores in the area do. And OPI really does last the best. Especially with a top coat of Seche Vite (not sure if that's the right spelling.)
