Vintage gift to a none vintage friend or colleague

As it's coming around to Xmas I was just wondering if you ever given a vintage gift to a none vintage friend or colleague,

What was it and what there reaction or maybe more to the point did you see them wear it ( as this is the powder roomafter all) ?

I have given a few gifts to non-vintage friends, but they didn't ever wear the clothing. I've had a bit more luck with old books- if you know something someone is interested in sometimes they get a kick out of a vintage book about it.

A vintage book is always a good choice. My best friend's a nature photographer, so for her last birthday I gave her a 1921 edition of "Lutz's Field Guide To Insects" -- something I knew she didn't have, and wasn't likely to get from anyone else.

It doesnt always work though -- I gave my niece an old book once and all she could say was "gee, it smells funny." Let the giver beware.

If its an item they might use...despite it being vintage...then yes..I would...


i.e. a birdwatching friend might get a kick out of a vintage bird book and vintage binoculars.

But someone who has no interests that mesh with vintage objects is just going to sigh and think you are forcing your interests on them if you give them old stuff.

For my husband, I'm buying him a vintage razor, a new brush, and some shave soap. He's been wanting to get into wet shaving, but never has taken the initiative. I figure Christmas is a good excuse.

Last year I got the hubby a vintage shaving razor - he loved it and has since collected some other vintage shaving items on his own.

I've given other friends vintage gag gifts much like CiCi's and they were also appreciated because they were tailored to the person, not so much that they were vintage.

I wouldn't give vintage just because I like it - but only if it suited the recipient.

My two brothers and my dad are not vintage enthusiasts at all, but they -do- love World War II. So I bought them LIFE magazines from 1943 with lots of pics and stories about the war. I can't wait until they open them.

I think once he loses some weight he's been cranky about, I'll have a much easier time.... but there I go hijacking the thread.

Unless there is some ulterior motive (see above), I tend to base all my gifts on the giftee's personality... though my daughter IS getting a pink reto-styled Radio Flyer trike from Santa...

My dad is very un-vintage, aside from when he was born, but I got him an old school shaving mug with shaving soap and he really likes it and uses it all the time! I don't think your man has to be vintage to appreciate it, it gives a nice shave and is just fun, I suppose.

2 Christmases or Birthdays ago....can't remember which now lol I gave my friend a vintage cig case...I did not take into consideration that cigs where smaller way in the day, I told him he could use it for biz cards lol.

I think maybe a nice vintage brooch would go over well, if you know they like accessories. Can't go wrong with rhinestones.

While it doesn't have to nessisarily be a vintage item, monogramming is always nice, I think. A hankerchief, towel set, watch, things along those lines with the added extra monogram.

I love getting vintagey things for my friends who are into vintage though. For years I've wrapped gifts in '50s Women's Weekly magazines and bits of ribbon purely because there was nothing else in the house when I was wrapping gifts at (as usual) the last minute. I thought it looked really cute, but the only other person who has ever thought so was my friend who loves '50s everything. I just got funny looks from everyone else.lol

I agree - monogramming makes the item very personal, be it a shirt, a lighter, or even an iPod

I tend to buy belted back suits, hand painted ties, and spectator shoes in my size for all my girlfriends. It isn't my fault they don't ever use them. Might as well get some use out of it.
