Vintage eyebrow shapes

When I was in college I got a wild hair idea (excuse the pun) to pluck off half my eyebrows. They were rather straight across and I wanted them to arch.

I plucked them and they never grew back. Now that I rarely, if ever, wear makeup, I have been thinking of getting them lightly tattooed, but am still fearful of that.

Any of you out there have tattooed eyebrows? How did it work for you?
I'd rather go to a makeup specialist than a tattoo parlor to get them put on.
And I have to be real careful about the color as the hair on my head is going gray.

I wonder if someone will ever invent fake eyebrows for people who have overplucked?? Afterall, there are fake eyelashes out there! That way, you can remove them once there is enough to work with. Plus they might come in handy for those who have naturally thin brows.

My other problem is that I have blonde hair at the corners of each arch and I think that is why they look different. Also, the lighting in my bathroom is not the best and I wondered if I have been plucking them in such a manner because of the lighting. Time to call in Extreme Makeover:Home Edition!! (haha all for eyebrow woes!)

Also, does anyone trim the brow so the hairs lay nicely? It seems like when I pluck, I end up with these WHALE sized hairs!

Yup, I have in the past trimmed the length of the hairs, but I think it looks much better if you just use brow gel to get them under control and into the shape you like.

I love doing different eyebrow shapes! My real eyebrows are really blonde and you pretty much can't see them unless I draw them in, so I can do any shape or colour I want. I've never plucked them or anything either since their not visible anyway.

I usually do my eyebrows in that angular 50s way, like this:

But I do tons of other shapes and colours as well. Not all of these are specific vintage shapes but I thought they might be fun to see anyway.

Long and sloping for a 20s like makeup.

I don't know if these are vintage or anything but I like them.

Big goth eyebrows.

Very thin.

I love this shape and it's probably my second most used one.

Colourful.

And this photo is really bad and approximately a hundred years old, but I had really great makeup on that was copied from Lota in Island of Lost Souls. I thought she was just the most beautiful thing, and her eyebrows were amazing. It didn't make me look anything like her but I loved it anyway.

Talking about eyebrows, here is my holy grail eyebrow
This is an old cover of a french Vogue.
I'd give my right arm and leg to have mine look like that! In general i go for the natural/thick look. Brooke Shields eyebrows circa 1980 is perfecction for me.

God, I wish I could have eyebrows like that. Even though I'm blonde, my eyebrows are just naturally black and have a rather distinct shape. Not much I can do with them when it comes to shaping., so I tend to play around with thickness. Usually, I keep them in a rather good 40's thickness, but for parties I tend to pluck them slightly more, just to get a distinct feeling of 30's.

They're jet black and they grow fast. Whee.

Makeup For Ever makes an eyebrow gel/filler that is water proof and stays put. You have to wash off with soap and water.

As for making them grow...Ardell Lash growth serum is great and castor oil has worked for me too.

Apparently Joan Crawford got hers to grow by treating them nightly with a mixture of Vaseline and castor oil. And she had completely plucked eyebrows in the 30s, then gigantic ones in the 40s!

I am temped and a little afraid to try this.

I know that there are links thru suppliers who specialize in wigs for those with Cancer. My aunt looked into it when she began to lose all her hair. If I recall they were a "stick-on" variety. She decided to go the route of drawing them in for the time being.

My aunt Chris was in the same situation. She had tried wigs for a short period but figured that she shouldn't hide behind them- there was nothing to be ashamed of. Like I said, it just made me curious!

My eyebrows are thin and sparse so I don't pluck them. Even removing one hair makes them look like a section is missing. If I try to pencil them, I tend to look like I have eyebrows drawn on with a sharpie because they are so thin. Usually I just leave them alone.

These are my natural eyebrows. Not much I can do with them, I'm afraid.

The thing about eyebrows is, if you are used to looking at yourself with no eyebrows.. when you add eyebrows they are going to look awkward on your face. Simply because you are not used to seeing them there. Just like someone who has eyebrows and then plucks them completely out or shaves them off completely (as I have) will notice the same awkward look to their face. It's really just a matter of getting used to it.

Try a powder such as Bare Escentuals eyebrow minerals, and then work your way up to a darker, thicker (however you like them) sort of eyebrow.

I've heard people say they look like Groucho Marx when they color in their eyebrows. But after awhile of getting used to them... they don't notice it anymore, or just like how they frame their face.

This might be a little off topic, but I'd like everyone's opinions on this. I dye my hair black (it's naturally a light brown), but my eyebrows are quite dark naturally. They are a dark brown, not quite black though. Every time I go to get them waxed or see a hairdresser, they ask me if I want them dyed black.

Now I've always read that your eyebrows should be a little lighter than your hair color, which mine are (and I don't think the difference is too drastic). I just get the impression that dying my brows to match will just be too harsh. Opinions?
