Vintage descriptions for new ideas

Okay, say that I have no ability to communicate, but as I said in the $5 word thread, there are some words I just don't like. 'E-mail' is one of them. I don't like the way it sounds. It's a dull word. So when it came down to printing some new business cards, I wanted something else, and now my card will read 'Electric Post:" followed by my address. Yes, I know the 'E' is for 'electronic', but that has too many syllables. 'Electric Post' sounds right to me.

Anyone else have a Burnsian (Something's coming over the faxtrola, Smithers.) word for 21st Century technology?

Regards,

Senator Jack

I call it Electro-post for the same reason!

I also type on an Electric Computer (to differentiate it from a chap who does sums for a living), and carry a Field Telephone when I'm out and about.

Field Telephone, I like that. Hope you do not mind if I lift that.

I had thought Electro-post too, Doc. And then Elect-O-Post but settled on Electric Post. I originally had 'Electronic Communiques:' but that was too long.

I tried to work out

Contact by

Telephone or Electric Post

on the card, but I couldn't get the composition right. I'm wondering if I can catch the printer now. I really like that 'Field Telephone'

I'm showing my age here but to me a field telephone goes by the nomenclature of TA-312 and is a box with a handset that you have to hook up to paired wires from a spool and crank to call out.

This all sounds rather like what France and Iceland do to prevent pollution of their language by foreign terms for new technology. They each have official bodies to create French and Icelandic versions of terms for "email" "personal computer", etc. An area for possible inspiration perhaps?

I prefer "Portable Telephone", myself - text messaging I call "portable telegraphy" - both of which make far more sense then the usual term over here of "mobile". The bally thing isn't 'mobile', it's portable. There's a difference!

I must say I like Electric Post, though

Really, I thought I was the only nut around here, making up words like that. Well, I'm happy to be in such fine company.

Portable telegraphy? You've certainly outdone me there, Cobden old boy, and I'm certainly going to swipe that, but I should think by the time the Colonel got that out of his mouth, the men would be up to their eyeballs in Zulus.

Electro-Camera - Charlie H., that's worthy of C Mongtgomery Burns himself.

Any takers for Electrogram?

Senator Jack

Based on the French language Department for creating French words I nominate the good Senator from New York to lead a Senate led comittee to set up this Department for Fedora Lounge readers. The new words will the then electro posted to members for immediate usage.

IVe always said electronic mail, but never refer to the 'portable telephone' as an object (I HATE phones!). I just say 'give me a gingle'. COme to think of it, my telephone isnt very portable. I rarely remove it from the residence.

Generally don't use the e-words

I try to avoid using the e-words like email, eCommerce, eBusiness, etc along with some the more popular tech terms like cellular phone. They drive me nuts with the stupidity of terms! They just reek of marketing. :rage: The "e" of course was intended to means it is "electronic", but if I am reading it on my computer, isn't that a given?!?!?!?

So some example terms I use instead -

Email is now "imail" (The “i” defining the type of interaction I want - informative, interactive, and intelligent, and not more junk mail) though just “Post” maybe better.

Cellular phone is just "phone" – who needs to know that they can get a hold of me all of the time?

When I get time I will add others.

I like "Electrogram" or "Electronigram" very much -- has a very New York World's Fair retrofuturistic cachet.

Just the thought of "cellphone" makes me itch. To me, a phone is a heavy metal object that can be used for talking local or Long Distance or for cracking walnuts. Try that with your cheesy plastic gizmos.

I rather like "electric post" -- very clever!

And for awhile now I've only half-sarcastically used the phrase "cellular device." That doesn't sound all that vintage, but what the heck.

Lastly, a buddy of mine cribbed "television machine" from an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show.

You're right, AND the crank is fun at parties.

"C'mere Private, hold this." :D
