Yup! Beer and wine sales, actually. They still do things that way, with only State owned and operated liquor stores selling hard liquor.

My father was in High School in Vermont in 1941, yet spoke about horse and carriage vendors like it was yesterday.

You are correct, Sir. Lester Joseph Gillis, a.k.a. George Nelson, a.k.a. "Baby Face" Nelson. Legend has it that very few referred to him as "Baby Face" in his presence and walked away unharmed because he hated the nickname, but he was a kid--only 25 years old when the shot fired by FBI Inspector Samuel P. Cowley ultimately ended his life.
