Videogames with a vintage feel

Okay, I've always wondered about this so here goes:

Any video-gamers out there who have played a "golden era" themed game?

I know it's a bit modern for the FL, but I have played several retro games and am always looking for more.

So far I've played:

-Mafia- Grand Theft Auto in the 30's, but a lot more respectable. No hookers or cocaine, and everybody's in fedoras and overcoats.

-Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb- duh! It's Indy Jones!

-Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth- very very Lovecraftian, therefore it's very very 1920's.

-King Kong- duh (again)!

-Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge- a personal favorite. Like an air-pulp come to life. Lotsa' souped up 30's style planes, zeppelins, and rogue-ish air pirates. Lotsa' fun.

Anybody else?

Crimson Skies fan here. I have the PC version, quite old, but I love it and it's the only game I play. I suppose I ought to get a joystick, but I've become a pretty decent pilot with the arrow keys. :)

Unfortunately, my computer is too outdated (or "vintage" if you will), so I won't be able to play the original for awhile. But High Road to Revenge on Xbox is totally outstanding. It's the only game I've ever started over again as soon as I've beaten it. I can't get enough of those Fortune Hunters

I would look at the WWII games. Medal of Honor was fun, and I heard Big Red One is really good.

The very first FPS I ever played was one of the Castle Wolfenstein games. I think I was about six. I have no idea which one but it was quite "scary." lol

Oh, yeah. Medal of Honor. Forgot about that one. Those are so much better than the glut of WWII shooters out there. The first three had the best music too.

Never played any Wolfenstein. I think it would be worth it just to fight a cyborg Hitler, though.

oops

A few more that I forgot about are Secret Weapons Over Normandy (fly Allied planes as well as crazy German prototypes) and Heroes of the Pacific (just like the previous, but the vintage poster menu interface is almost worth the price of admission).

Thanks for bringing this up, Cipher. I keep saying that I'm going to get a PS2, but never seem to get around to finding the extra dough. One day, as I always say. I really wanted to get some Star Wars games and give 'em a blast (yeah, I'm a big fanboy!) and those Golden Era games sound great.

Brothers in Arms

Played the first one through on all the levels and it really has a "you are there" feel to it. Now I'm on the second one,...and it is hard!
I'll probably be on this one for a while.

Believe it or not, the mobile phone version of Brothers in Arms is surprisingly good. And very hard as well.

One problem with FPS's now is they're so familiar, WWII or otherwise.

There are only so many "new" weapons out there and the weapons of WWII are more or less the same weapons we've had from 1900 on through today. A sub gun is a sub gun whether it's a Sten or an MP5. A .30-40 Krag is a bolt action, so is a Mauser Gewehr, so is a Remmy 700 sniper. Heck, except for a slower reload sequence the revolver hasn't really changed since the 1860's. Except for the "gravity gun" there hasn't really been a cool weapon type introduced even in sci-fi based games.

We've shot aliens, robots, Red Chinese, eldritch horrors, Nazi's, demons and more Red Chinese. There's nought left to kill that ain't been killed before.

A Span-Am War FPS will look like any jungle shooter, WWI and WWII are mostly distinguishable by uniforms, not weapons. Korea and Vietnam share the same problems. Modern War has been detailed by Operation Flashpoint about as well as it needs to be, but there are a host of other quality options as well.

As far as military strategy goes- Squad unit tactics today were basically formalized a century ago. Surprise, concentration and combined arms concepts are millenia old.

I'd like to see some Napoleonic-Colonial era wargames but they would hardly be PC anymore and "forming square" so you can gut cavalry or impis does not a dynamic FPS experience make.

I think until we have true immersive alternative reality available the FPS genre is kinda done as far as innovation goes.

How bout it visionaries?

Unfortunately, this goes back to the argument that "art is dead". There is no innovation, nothing new that can be done, really. Small innovations, but nothing mind-blowing.

On another topic, I think a stealth game featuring The Shadow would be cool, maybe an action-adventure "Tomb Raider" type game with Doc Savage , or a Spider FPS. :D

Oh I agree it would be cool, but in essence it would just be "skins" over some other stealth game.

I don't think we've reached a limit of innovation, I think we've just hit a plateau of technology.

Flyboys!

How about the first Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator (WWII Europe)
For a long time I could not fly the great blue yonder, because the game was to old for my new PC...but then I found a new edition to Windows XP.
(Only GBP 5,00 on AmazonUK) ....so now I am back in the cockpit.
Fighting the Battle of Britain!
Am I the only one of the few?
