I'm fairly anti-V-Day. Certainly anti-raised prices, and the overwrought purchase of leftover bits at the grocery store on the way home from work the day of (15% off boxes of chocolates! Only slightly crushed!).

I would much more appreciate small things that indicated thoughfulness and pre-planning.

However, I am actually getting something I adore: We're going to a Mexican wrestling show in LA tomorrow night (Lucha VaVoom!). *That's* a Valentine's Day to remember--sexo y violencia! ;)

The Best Valentine. . .

I stopped by my sister's house and was greeted by my 2 year old niece running to me yelling "Be Valentine, Be Valentine!" Followed by a big kiss. Made my day!!!:D

"One February evening in North Chicago, seven well-dressed men were found riddled with bullets inside the S.M.C Cartage Co. garage. They had been lined up against a wall, with their backs to their executioners and shot to death. With the exception of Dr. Reinhardt H. Schwimmer these men were mobsters working under the leadership of gangster and bootlegger, "Bugs" Moran. Within a few seconds, while staring at a bare brick wall, these seven men had become a part of Valentine's Day history: the St. Valentine's Day Massacre."

I found this old thread by accident, while looking for info on a leather jacket [huh]
But it's fun, and I agree with most of the anti-valentine sentiments. The quote above gives me the brilliant (though clearly goofy and dangerous) idea to make my girlfriend a V-card commemorating the above event lol lol lol

Like Mothers Day and Fathers Day Valentine Day is a sad excuse for people who are unable to show love and affection to their loved ones the rest of the year!!!

Plus a grand marketing event.

Ha, ain't that the truth. Last year, actually, I spent it out ith a bunch of friends at a Burlesque night in Belfast. I'm not at all embarassed to admit that I had long planned to head over for the event, and only when I actually arrived there and saw how the venue was dedcorated did it connect in my head that the date had any significance other than the event itself. lol

I've been much too cynical for much too long to be sucked into yet another commercialised window-dressing holiday with no real meaning behind it. :)

Our baby girl was born on the 13th. so I love it. They made me a Valentine with her tiny thumbprints.
What is not to love about Valentines Day. A day for Lovers. Come on now!
This year we should lavish each other with the works to just of survived. :eusa_doh:

p.s. working like a dog shutting one of my stores down so I am taking a break now and then on the FL. It helps.

I went into a drugstore on New Year's Day and they had 2 aisles of Valentine's Day accoutrements all set up!

I really did laugh out loud.

We have a whole day planned for Feb 14. Being Oregon's Sesquicentennial Day, we will spend most of it at a demonstration day in Albany discussing tailoring techniques of the 1850's and helping in the kitchen. Then we will be off to Champoeg State Park, site of the first legislative action in the state, for a semi formal Barn Dance.

yup, we celebrate Oregon Day every year. Flowers die, I can't eat chocolate, and I feel appreciated year round. So while I think Valentine's Day is a wonderful idea, we choose not to set or attempt to meet the expectations that so often surround it.

Very nice version....she is a talented lady.

My husband totally boycotts Valentine's Day, and has since I met him. His thoughts, "Why do I need a special day to tell you or show you I love you? I should be doing that every day, not just one day out of 365 of them."

And while I completely agree, I was secretly over the moon when my 6 year old son started to bring me homemade Valentine's from school telling me how much he loves me. Nothing better than being showered with love by a child. :D

Those Valentines mean more to me than any ole' box o' chocolates or roses. I like wild flowers better anyway. :)

Cheers,

I'm already getting hit with e-mails from store I bought gifts from in the past. I think Valentine's Day is a scam on the order of the engagement ring (as in I have to shell out big bucks for a ring but why can't she get me a PS3 or something. . .), but I put effort into it to let the wife know I care. We try to keep it kind of low key. Dinner and dancing or dinner and a movie. That kind of thing.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!

Sorry, had to say it...

At any rate, I no longer actively promote any particular uprising against the day, but I do enjoy reminding people that one of the possible Saint Valentines was, for his time, a criminal who was executed for overstepping the bounds of his friendship with the then-reigning Emperor, Claudius Gothicus.

Of course, the truth of that statement is subject to debate, but the conversation doesn't usually make it that far ;)

(I do, as you may have gathered, have little use for the notion of the day as something special, let alone a holiday, beyond it being the date that Oregon was admitted into the Union.)

Happy cat adoption day!

Our cat, Valentina, decided to stop being feral and move in on Valentine's Day 14 years ago (she's old but very youthful, like me) and so we celebrate that as well as lots of gooshy, lovey-dovey stuff. If I don't have a gig, we try to have a nice dinner and I do get flowers. I tend to give him a nice vintage accessory. We also give each other cards.
And considering my birthday is 7 days later, I am doing pretty well to be getting anything!
Of course, it helps to be deeply, madly, truly in love.

Always hated it, still do. Even when i'm involved with someone i ignore it. Its just another excuse to buy buy buy. And as someone pointed out earlier, its supposed to be a religious feast day. But there's more profit to be made on secularizing it and making everyone guilty for not buying valentine's day presents or cards!

Also the whole PDA thing really gets me angry. Can't people just hold hands and wait to get home before they are all over each other? Self control? bahhhhbb :rage: :rage:

oh yes and annon i was unaware it was in the reign of Gothicus that this all happened. 268 AD, i was sure it would be after the establishment of Christianity as the official religion in Jovian's time or something. I'm surprised its that old.
