Show me the gal who learned to drive on a flivver, collects records and old junk, and refers to her husband or boy friend as her "Better Half".

No lady would do that because it would be so transparently untrue.;)

"Every woman secretly thinks that she is a far better wife than her husband deserves."

That's from a movie (can't remember which one), and it's paraphrased, but... ;)

Now where were we, 36 pages later?

Oh Yes, I have been following it for some months now

lol
This morphed into a fun conversation about obscure 30s music and I actually contributed to it!!! lol And I NEVER get involved in these "I hate the moderns/hipsters" threads!!!

My husband liking "my" music is a very rare occurrence lol

Yes we definitely get the better end of the deal. The expression- "Man works from sun to sun but woman's work is never done" has never been more true as social changes put more women (single or married w/families to raise) in the workforce.

I have a vague rabbit phobia. First it was seeing Watership Down at 6 - I was terrified and wanted to leave but my older sister refused to budge so I had to sit it out - and then, later on, we've had a massive rabbit problem where I live. When you've seen them fighting with rats over scraps of food, they're not so cute anymore...

True and everyman prior to marrige believes he'll bump into the perfect woman sometime after leaving his church wedding. For some after marrying it becomes a fervent hope.
I used to crash weddings with two of my friends in the 80's. We never felt that way, but a lot of women seemed to - and Bride's Maids were the most prone. Hence, the reason for said crashing. It was the best thing since Club 54! :)

One of my favorites. For a real party-time atmos, play that alongside "It Sure Is Swell To Be Laying Out Dead," "I'm Just an Unemployed Sweetheart," and "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz!"

Sounds like a good party playlist to me. Can I get these anywhere...or can you send them to me? I also love the song in your sig as sung by Chick Bullock.

lol All the men who have contributed to this deserve a very nice dinner. So take the wife out! ;)

Consider it done. Sushi sounds good due to the heat. She thanks you!

Make sure you go down this checklist like I do every day:

I know several others, actually, including some right here on the Lounge -- although most of us are less obsessed by discographical minutiae than the boys tend to be, and more interested in just listening to the records for the sake of the music.
I had forgotten the discerning, yet passionate, HadleyH, and am regretting doing so!

Anyway, you might be right about the discog nonsense. With a lot of guys it gives a sense of ownership and mastery - especially if you collect things for the only he-man reason, which is completeness, cornering the market, bragging rights. The best thing about a performance is usually its rarity.

With some others, especially those into the 20s and 30s, it's an outgrowth of movie fanship, and its fascination with glamor and artifice. They'll peg every tune to a film or show, and from there, an actress or actor. You might call the 78 disc an "aide de Camp," with a capital C. The music? It's summed up with adjectives. Dreamy, divine, superb, sublime.

With me - a musician, unlike most collectors - it's the music, but not just. It might be metaphysical. (It might also be hooey.) I always slap a date on a cut, even an mp3 file. It gives context - something almost always missing in a great collection (mine's good, but won't ever be great). It reminds me that a record cut direct to wax isn't just an object, but a slice of real time. Nobody ever lived in the past, or sang or played music in the past. You can hear that on records as they were made then.
