Two hats on one CNN panel!

So I flipped on CNN a few minutes ago and saw both David Gergen and Roland Martin in fedoras. The hats aren't the best examples, but I take it as a sign that "real" hats are finding their way back into the average man's working wardrobe.

I'm probably dead wrong about that, but ...

Martin's ain't good (far too casual, with those grommeted crown vents and all), but Gergen's is borderline atrocious.

But, you know, that's a hat aficionado's take on it. It's apparently quite cold where they are (witness Soledad O'Brien's choice of headwear) and those hats are doing more to keep them warm than most folks would ever know.

Definately a step in the right direction and as Tony mentioned the hats scream out one thing to us hat nuts, but to most people they just see a brimmed hat without big dealing it too much.

Gergen has a cold. You can hear the congestion in his voice. That's probably the only reason he was allowed to wear a hat on camera.

I think they have more leeway than that. Those anchors have plenty of pull. If Anderson wants to wear a hat I'm sure he would.

It's a segment that you can switch to CNN and see right now. The talkers are on and off screen through the day talking about the inauguration.

My apologizes - I flipped on CNN at 3:30 pm Eastern on 1/17/09 and the fedoras (and, less importantly, the pundits underneath them) are still on.

Everyone is right - the hats are less than optimal. Martin's is far too casual for TV. Gergan's is a shapeless black mass atop his head. Apparently, he favors this "shape" judging by another hat of his that he wore for Bush's 2nd Inauguration:
