In the past I've had good luck washing ties and getting bad stains out.

Unfortunately some ties seem to want to twist around their length and get all out of alignment when they are washed, particularly '30s ties.

Does anyone know of a way to keep this from happening? It's such a pain trying to get a tie straightened out again.

cheers

That twisted rope around your neck....

I have had the same problem.
Ties are usually cut on the bias, i.e. at an angle to the grain of the fabric, when they are not... they twist, or they just get out of shape. The solution that I came up with was to trace the tie on a sheet of plastic, (i used pattern sheets from the sewing section) cut it a wee bit smaller all over and forgoing the flair on the narrow end for your vintage ties, cut to fit the narrowest section of the tie. Then insert the V.T.W.S.R.P. (vintage tie wash shape retainer pattern) in from the wide end and wash by hand and hang to dry. Smooth out the wrinkles and lightly press when almost dry. This should also keep the inner stiffener / puffer coarse fabric piece straight also.
