I got this for prom.
I really am not an expert when it comes to suits or the like; as you all know, hats and ties are my thing. I think it's beautiful and my girlfriend loves it. My favorite detail is the waistband on those pants. Was that treatment a common thing?
It's going to need a little bit of alteration ( It must have belonged to some amazingly tall skinny guy; It'w a 38L with a 30 waist and a 37" inseam!?; 51" outseam!?)
What do you think of it? Did I do okay for 37 bucks total?

The buy of the century, Ol' Boy. Perhaps the pants weren't hemmed. 37" inseams seems impossible for those dimensions, but of course, once you state something as an impossibility along comes a man with some very long legs to make a liar out of you. ;)

Post some pics wearing it sometime.

Yeah, I was kind of doubtful of that measurement as well, but if the inseam was a typo, the 51" outseam would have to be a typo as well, as it makes sense with the inseam, and for both to be wrong is a lot harder to do.

Dinerman,

High praise to you for the company you keep...between you, Douglas and Marc Chevalier, there are no finer noses for tracking down vintage men's clothing. I am constantly amazed at the treasures that the three of you come up with!

Great tux! Here's a scan from a 1936 style guide from P.H. Davis showing an offering very similar to yours. As Marc said though, the pants are rare...nothing like them in my catalog.

P.S. - That redefines the term "long rise!"

I dare say if it were a single breasted jacket, you could pretty much skip the cummerbund with that waistband.

If it were a single breasted jacket, you'd wear a waistcoat with it.

I strongly believe that Dinerman's tux is from the '30s. Cummerbunds didn't become popular with dark tuxedos until the 1940s, although they were worn with lighter colored "summer" evening jackets from the '30s onward.

Good thing, then, this is a double breasted. While double breasteds look cool for both suits and dinner jackets, they can get pretty warm. I can't imagine wearing one with a waistcoat.

*cough cough* Like my Bro. No. 2. I saw that tux and sent it to Bro. No. 1, who didn't go for it, but I suggested he call No. 2 at college. I guess No. 2 couldn't go for it, either.

It would've been too short it it was unhemmed, anyway. He's 32 x 38. lol

Good job! I'm someone here go it!

Well, thanks, all.
Now I have to figure out what to wear with it. I guess I have to find a black bow tie, white braces and a wing collar shirt.
I hope it loos as good on me as it does on the guy in the illustration.

Dinerman, you have an astonishing ability!

You manage to sniff out the most incredible finds! :eusa_clap I was telling my wife about you and your antique shop finds last night. Simply amazing. I am extremely envious, though despite the fact I don't know you other than through here it's a fond envy--and I think a lot of others here know exactly what I mean!

I can't even imagine what your collection will be like in 10 years.

Wear that tux with pride, and don't forget the pictures of the event!

Cheers,
Tom

Well- I got my prom ticket today.
The plan, which is being organized by my friends, is we're all going to go to the bowling alley beforehand for a quick game and dinner. Then off to prom.

I think it's pretty cool- all the dresses my girlfriend is looking at to buy to wear to prom are pre 1950. :) I guess this whole vintage style thing is catching.

Wing collar isn't necessary for black tie, and personally I find normal collar shirts more comfortable to wear anyways. If you want to really look different (apart from your dinner suit, which will obviously be 100x better than what everyone else is wearing), find a pique fronted shirt rather than pleated. Charles Tyrwhitt sells some, but I'm sure you can also find one at a thrift shop or the 'Bay. Alternatively, you can get one made up, but that's a risk many don't want to take.

As for shoes, just wear black calf plain toe shoes and you'll be fine. I've never understood this absolute need for patent leather.

well- It came today. Man this guy was tall and skinny. The waist is 30", the inseam really is 37"!
So- the waist is 2" too small. I'm either going to get it let out, run a lot and do a whole lot of sit ups in the next two weeks, or just tough it out. Maybe a combination of the three.

I'm absolutely amazed at what nice condition it's in. No mothbites, nothing. It looks like it's brand new.

I'm quite happy.
