Prom is the 19th- almost 2 weeks away. I'm not worried about the hem, but the waistband's complex looking (at least to me), and I don't know how they'd do that. I think I'll take it to the tailor tonight.

You did it...

...once again! What a terrific outfit! Enjoy the whole evening. The bowling alley thing is a lot of fun. My Sunday School class decided to go formal at a bowling alley for a Valentines Party a year ago. We had a blast. The comments were a real riot, too. Most thought we had all come from a wedding - on a Tuesday night! (If the truth be known, most of our bowling shoes were probably of the vintage variety, too!) Have fun. :)

I took it to the tailor today. He told me he could fix the taper in the sides of the jacket; make it go straight down from where the armholes are. He also told me the armholes were much too small. I took the jacket, and put it in the car, out of harms way.
The pants, he said, are impossible to let out, because of the waistband. (more likely, it's just harder to do, and he doesn't want to bother), so it's time to do some sit ups.
So- I'm just getting them hemmed. He told me they should be done in about 10 days.

This guy's the only tailor in town, which is why I took it to him. I don't think I'm ever going back again.

The real Henry said:
How old is that guy that he does not know anything about classic fit of a suit?

I personally would try to find another tailor!
The guy was in his late 50s or so.

I don't really have the time to find another one. Next thing I need worked on is certainly going somewhere else, but there isn't anybody else in town, I don't know who the tailors in other areas are, and this is the one that I can get my parents to drive me to.

But, my folks have had some work done by this guy before, and he does do nice work, he just doesn't know vintage. I think it kind of startled him.

I wouldn't have left the trousers with him. I'd have run a mile, and hemmed the trousers with double-sided sticky tape. I hate to say it, but be prepared for a shock. I'm not saying he'll do anything nasty to the trousers, just saying that all the warning signs are there. We've had so many stories of destroyed vintage trousers because "a tailor said he knew what he was doing". Zippers removed and shortened, legs tapered to the cuff, you name it, it has happened.

This guy should be a dealer in red flags. He is a master at putting them out for all to see.

Do some asking around. You might just find a lady in town that has spent a lot of her life altering clothes for family and friends and would know exactly what needs to be done. Churches are good places to find these women. I've got three or four women in my church that I trust to help me out when needing alterations. Be cautious, of course, and ask a lot of direct and pointed questions when you find someone who might be able to do the job for you.

I'll start looking for whatever my next project is.
I'll also post whatever becomes of my pants, good or bad.
