I love turtlenecks. I find them incredibly comfortable, yet dressy enough, and I want to make them the staple of my wardrobe. When did turtlenecks become commonly accepted casual wear? I know they were worn by sailors for eons, but at what point did it become acceptable to wear a turtleneck as everyday attire? And when did the mock turtleneck become fashionable for more than just beatniks to wear? I want to say the 50's on both counts, but I'm not sure. Thank you.

Noel Coward popularized turtlenecks in the 1920s.

He was a blithe spirit, although in every picture of him he's either wearing a suit or a bathrobe. But that reminds me of a little exchange he once had with Dorothy Parker. Dorothy was wearing a suit one day and Noel Coward said, "Dorothy, you almost look like a man in that suit." And Dorothy without skipping a beat replied, "So do you, Noel. So do you."

My question is "Where do you get decent quality wool turtlenecks?" I have a few from Jos Bank, decent quality, good price, but VERY baggy modern fit. I would like some that are more fitted, and most places only sell cotton. I'm not a fan of cotton turtlenecks or sweaters in general. Thank you!

J.Crew sells wool turtlenecks (or has in recent years) as I've bought some merino and some cashmere from it in the last two years and they are fitted (I'm 6'1", 155lbs and they fit well - not baggy). If you find something you like, wait for a 25% off sale as J.Crew has those sales regularly on line and in stores.
