Do you think he puts a sweatband and a liner in each creation?

Personally, I think it would go against the grain to wear one of those pithy creations.

Maybe I don't know too much about the properties of wood, but does anyone else think that the hats might crack easily?

I wonder as well how susceptible they would be to damage under change in moisture ....

Looks to me like burled walnut. Quite hard and I'm sure the maker imbues them with proper oils and finishes.

Probably not more likely to crack (unless dropped, etc) than the bowls.

Nice work, really, as a novelty or art piece.

I have to say I think that is a god-awful waste of a really large piece of beautiful wood to make something that is basically a visual gimmick. I'd be more impressed if the hat was made out of a few ounces of veneer carefully crafted into a truly wearable hat. Hacking up a 50 pound burl to make a 9 ounce hat just seems crass. Form follows function - is it any surprise that no one else makes hats from wood?

So I take it you wouldn't be interested in a matching jacket. ;)

Very nice

Excellent - that makes me want to talk to Art about making me a 100% beaver fur felt custom canoe, with matching grosgrain ribbon gunwales....

I almost forgot, the felt canoe would of course require a birch-bark paddling jacket and hat...
