Trouser weight

I was looking online for fabrics and one of them caught my eye. It is an English tweed fabric, good quality and all.

The fabric weight, however, is around 480 grams / meter, about 17 oz. Is that too heavy, thick, for trousers?

Bookster seems to classify 450 grams / metre as "medium weight tweed..."

This picture is from a 30's catalog, what would you guess the fabric weight to be? They look like quite heavy tweed to me.

No, it's not too heavy. Actually, you can wear heavier cloth trousers and still not break a sweat although you couldn't stand the same weight for a jacket. The heavier the fabric the better the drape, so you should choose the heaviest trouser weight you can while still being comfortable with the temperature. I have trousers made from a 900 grams linen twill. The trousermaker hated making them but they wear great!

I believe back in the day 17 oz. would still have been thought of as medium weight, bordering on heavy.

I placed an order with Hemrajani a few days ago. :(

Well, it won't be my last order. :)

Love the cuffs... and the trousers!

My entirely inexpert and largely superstitious 0.02c is that the reason so much vintage has survived longer than modern trousers is that they were made from heavier, more durable fabrics. I like a good heavy trouser, especially in the Winter. (Oddly enough, I find light synthetics can be very comfortable in Summer). If I was having a suit made for Summer, I'd go with the heaviest linen or canvas I could find.

Edward, my linen twill trousers wear actually much too warm for hot summer days. But they are perfect for sunny days during shoulder season or even winter. I wouldn't want linen trousers that are heavier than 14oz. for summer.

I would love to have some Fresco trousers made, though. Fresco is supposed to wear pretty cool and is not prone to wrinkling, making it perfect for travelling.
