Burberry do now do them in black and navy as well (keeping an eye for those too, I love the look of a black trench for those times of year when my leather one is too heavy), but I have never seen one in a shop / vintage store / anywhere that isn't the traditional tan colour.

TB have always done them in black and navy AFAIK - at least in the fifty years or so that I have been wearing them. In my experience black is the most common (and certainly the cheapest) hue to be found in vitage clothing stores, probably because they are regarded as less desirable that the tan ones. Vintage Clothing in Birmingham has two black ones in at the moment.

Whereabouts is that... it's not the one just round the corner from the Glee, is it? I'm up in Brum every other month or so for the CandyBox Burlesque night (you're not a regular there, are you?), so I might well check that out when I'm next there....

Makes sense that there would be more used black ones - they're not the signature model, look less like what Bogie wore, so probably less desirable, yeah.... I wonder too do they wear better for longer because black wouldn't show up day to day stains as easily?

No it's in Digbeth, opposite the National Express coach station. At the moment there is one hanging on the wall on the left as you go in, about half way down the shop. I haven't looked at it too closely (it's not my size) but there are some marks on the left sleeve that may clean out.

You could try the Rag Market in St. Martins, too. There's a stall that sometimes has them.

The stereotypical vintage trenchcoat

Where is the best place to find a modern make of trenchcoat with stereotypical golden era styling?

Do you know what I mean?

I'm looking to buy a new trenchcoat, and I want something that is just a stereotype of vintage styling.

If this doesn't make sense let me know...

Well, pretty much all I can think of is the classic double breasted trench coat with gun flaps. Try to look for them in pure cotton instead of poly/cotton like so many are now.

You're right it is!

BTW, the G_ F_ words appears again... Can we have a 'sticky' explaining why a trench coat does not have a G_ F_ and how a STORM flap works?

So I just won this on eBay:

4ebe_1_sbl.JPG

Burberry Trench, probably 1980s model I think, khaki colour.... it's one of the 100% cotton ones according to the seller. On the downside, as far as I can see in the photos it lacks the brass D rings on the belt, and it may have a small stain on the sleeve, but for the price (I've won it at GBP30.06 - that's about sixty bucks US currently, or 30% of what they seem to go for currently on the'Bay over here) that's no biggie. I'll see what turns up on thed doorstep when it gets here.... Photos will follow in due course!

I have always used Global Priority Bags for anything I get shipped here from the US, and they are as cheap as $5, and if the one in question is the same size as my trenchcoat it might fit in a $9.50 one or the next size up which I think is $16, you have to be tough with US eBay sellers, most of them don't know jack about shipping internationally.

Amen specially when your Down Under!

Ha, well, there's one in particular I'd like to impress with it if i got the chance! ;) It's a European 54 - i.e. a 44" chest. I'm not sure how that'll work out, but at that price (currently any of them in the UK and with nice photos sell on eBay for average about GBP100), I'll not have a problem recouping if it turns out to be too big. Typically in an outer coat I've always gone up a size (I most commonly wear a 42R in a suit jacket), so a 44" coat over the top has always worked for me. Still keeping my eye out for another couple of Burberrys on the bay, of course - black and navy would be nice, and if this is a very greeny khaki, I might keep an eye for a more ivory / cream coloured one too - always good to be able to maximise colour coordination options, IMO! lol

My current wide brim fedora (albeit some wouldn't care for it being wool felt) should look sharp with this, though I can really feel the pull of a carbon grey Akubra Stylemaster.... hmmnn.... time I got around to that huge pile of stuff I have for selling on eBay so I can afford these flioghts of fancy!

If it shapes up, treat yourself to a cocktail in the American Bar at the Savoy!

I'll start saving now! ;)

Edited to add:

With reference to the discussion on the storm flaps above.... This morning, it looked like it might rain, but I was a little too warm yesterday with the leather trenchcoat on over the top of a blazer. I remember an old grey trench I had in the wardrobe from years ago... I was a lot smaller back when I bought it (it was a Debenhams 38/small.... still fits ok, but noticeably too short in the sleeves now)... wore it for years, but now it's time for it to go off to eBay. Oh well... anyhow, the reason for mentioning it here was I'd never paid a whole lot of attention to the details before, but I noticed this morning that it has two storm flaps, just like Bogies. I wonder was someone in the debenhams design dept in the early 90s a fan?? Heh.

Ralph Lauren Trench Coat from Sierra Trading Post

http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/...uren-Double-Breasted-Trench-Coat-For-Men.html

I ordered this coat from Sierra Trading Post and the coat is awesome. I love the design and can find little about it that I do not like, however, the color is all wrong and I also ordered a size too big. I ordered the coat in 46 regular not fully realizing that overcoats are automatically one size larger. The thing fits me like a tent and because it is a regular and not a longer version then that only highlights the extra bulk around the middle as the whole getup now makes my legs look tiny. Oh well, my bad and not Sierra’s fault at all.

I have not fully finished the return process yet so I can’t comment on that yet Sierra’s delivery and service so far have been top quality. I called the 1-800 customer service number and actually talked to a regular person who graciously answered all my questions. The box that the coat came in also contained a return ups label for returns all ready, so, all I need do is fill out the form and repackage the box and call ups. I will most likely be charged for the shipping but I would actually feel bad if I were not because it is my fault completely that I am returning it.

One thing that I like about Sierra Trading Post’s web site is that I can always see what they have in stock at any time before I order. That really helps a lot.

The thing that bugged my about the whole affair was the color of the coat. The web site lists the color as taupe but that it not what it really is. It is much greyer than taupe as I know it. In fact I would say that the color was blue grey completely. Also the accents on the coat are navy blue not black. This only makes the entire coat appear that much greyer. Being that I have worked for a newspaper for graphic design and went to college for it I should have known that most studio photography will make colors appear lighter than they actually are. As well, in a darker setting (like a bar) the colors will appear darker than they are. All in all, the color is all wrong for the intended color schemes for outfits that I want to wear with this trench coat.

I will post more about the features of the coat that I like and hopefully pictures tomorrow.

Can anyone suggest where I can get a good tan colored trench coat without paying the $1500 dollars that Burberry wants for one? After finally learning the basics of color matching in outfits and clothing I am certain that a tan quality trench coat that fits me well will not only be a necessity if I don’t want to tote an umbrella everywhere, but will also be the best overcoat that I can get for form, function, and style. There are a host of reasons why tan trench coats have endured the fashion scene for so long. They are just wonderful for almost anything.

Yeah, Burberry trench coats are crazy expensive these days. A nice clean one can be picked up on eBay for GBP100 / USD200 or so, though.
