Actually, these tiny vacation houses are still a thing here in Vienna. And in Germany too. They are called kleingartenverein häuschen. Basically, most city dwellers live in apartments and ride public transit. Around the edges of the city --or even sprinkled around inside the city-- many cities have set aside little areas where you can rent (or buy) small garden plots which most people use for vegetable gardens in the summer. These plots can also come with these cute little summer houses. It is still a thing in Central Europe. Many people are very much into growing their own summer vegetables. This is as normal as beer and wine that is cheaper than water, bakeries on every corner, and nudist campgrounds!

Insightful. Thanks for sharing that. Made me think of the Keystone, a tourist court on the outskirts of the town I grew up in that was demolished in the mid 90s.

Nice place and it looks like a good neon sign out front so you won't miss it at night. "Fried Chicken" and "Liquors," to the point as, after a long drive, the Fading Fasts don't need to be told more as they slow down to turn in.

So long as it isn’t disturbed ...

A friend’s large house, dating from Nineteen-Oh-Something, was sided in asbestos tiles some decades after it was built. The original siding, having been protected by that covering all these years, is probably in pretty good shape. But my friend has no intention of ever finding out.

We've got a local motor court called the "Walona Motel." Judging by the post card I found online, it used to not be a bad looking place to stay. Our town exists right on US Route 30, one of the first highways in the country to span coast to coast. In the earlier days, I could imagine it brought a little revenue to the town, and rest to road weary travelers, but nowadays it's looking a little worse for wear. But, to be entirely honest, I can't really imagine who'd want to stay in our town anyway, unless they were desperate for a night's rest.

Namely it's boring and commercialized. It has no downtown, and the people in charge of making a plan would prefer not to. In fact, they just announced another gas station, which will fit in just fine with the other 17 of them around town. They like to approve gas stations, because the town charges them a higher tax rate.

Mokena is a more picturesque suburban town than New Lenox.
