Was there much diference between the Fed iii and the iv? Anyone compare them?

According to the specs Fed III has a 6" crown, while the Fed IV has a 5 3/4" crown which is more like an Indy hat. Both have the same dimensional brim I think of 2 3/4" on the front and back and 2 1/2" on the sides.

I finally got some photos, not great, but photos of my two Federation IV's. My wife thinks there is too much crown.

I'm struggling with the bash on the Moonstone.

Actually I ran into this problem with my wife when I first started wearing these straight crowned hats. She was too used to seeing the modern style. Now she's used to them.

IMHO they look fine. You could even put a little more height on them, but I don't think they look too tall at all. It is a matter of what you are comfortable with. But they look fine to me.

metropd, I never realized how high you like to wear your hats. I mean, I knew you did... but just never really thought about it until this great picture.

Anyway, let me be the Nth person to say you have serious style! That very high tilt looks very edgy.

The Fed IV is a 5 5/8" crown, isn't it? I'd never say that was too much. Anything under 5 1/2" is too LITTLE crown!lol

Brad

"More crown" - this season's "more cowbell."

lol

It can be frustrating at times if you are looking something done and other folks want it one 'their way', but on the other hand I find something very attractive about knowing that a certain hatter, tailor, or whichever branch of the fine arts they belong to, does things a certain way, and he or she is the go too guy / girl for the job.... I like eccentrics. I are one.... lol

I agree that proportions can be an issue. Also, there is familiarity: My Fed IIIs seemed huge when I first tried them on, but my eye grew accustomed to them very quicky.

I think we are now getting into the answer to my initial question: what is meant by "too much crown."

Personally, I have always liked the blockier (for lack of a better word) hats - straight sides, with enough height to create more of a "tug-boat" pinch. I also like a good width of brim. It just took me time to figure out exactly what I was looking for and to be able to articulate that and then find that type of hat. Fortunately my quest lead me to the FL.

My first and only other fedora is a Borsalino Como, which is a very nice hat. However, it just never had enough crown and the straight sides to get the look I was hoping for. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the hat - it is just not my ideal. Both the Fed IV and CD are much closer to my ideal/vision of what I wanted my hat(s) to look like. That being said, when I first put them on my wife cringed and said I looked like an Amish farmer (and I have to agree - both hats looked pretty big compared to the Como. I have grown used to the look and (hopefully) my wife and daughter will as well.

Yes, I think it is that all my other Fedoras are tapered. Is that the correct term for the slope?

Thanks!

Which one do you think has too much crown? Campdraft or Adam? I guess it's all individual taste. But when I try on a hat if it does'nt look right to me, I will not wear it. I've been told that one of these hats has too much crown and is too much hat for me????

Open the pic you want in Photobucket. At the 'Share This Image' window, on the last option...'IMG Code', click on the IMG address. When I click on this it automatically copies the URL. Then paste it into your post. If you click on preview post you should see it.

The darker brown is the Akubra Campdraft. The other is an Adam Majestic.
The Campdraft seems to be too much hat for me.[huh] My wife tells me the Campdraft looks too big for me, so it's never been worn.

I disagree. I think that the Campdraft looks better on you. The crown on the Adam is too low.

How tall are the crowns?
