Interesting-

You AND your friend's Father are both interviewing and he is a Woman..?
This "interviewing" thing is a problem in contemporary American English.
Being interviewed/interviewing.

I hope there's no proof-reading in the job description.

Anyway-

Suit- but plain not Dandy.
Do not over combine/accessorise.

I'd wear a suit. Maybe not a full on 30s repro with accessories so you look like you stepped out of 1936 - you don't want to risk non-vintage people looking at you and thinknig you're in "fancy dress." A suit worn well though is the only thing I'd ever consider for an interview -tBH, if I were on the other side of it, even knowing that I am in an environment that is largely casual a lot of the time too (academia), It would imprint on me if someone didn't look like they had made an effort for the interview. I remember little brother giving off about an interview he went to in a suit - he's a programmer, and the interviewer was in jeans. He got the job, though.

I'm interviewing for a position at UF, where I'd be working with computers mainly. This is a full time position. My friend's father is the one interviewing, and she suggested dress pants, shirt, and tie. Should I just go ahead with a suit? I'd hate to be overdressed, especially with the fact that I pocket square and tie clip it every time I do.

Opinions appreciated, especially from those in the field of computers.

Maybe you should have made this thread a poll;) .

I say wear a suit too.

I think a suit can always be worn....as long as it doesn't look like a uniform, ceremonial robe or costume. If you look like you are going to rip it off as soon as you get back to the car, it is a loser.

Well put. I have been thinking aboutthis lately. The reason suits are seen as uncool or undesirable stems mainly from the fact that they are cheap and comfortable. They look like exactly that, a uniform that you want to get out of as soon as possible. On the other hand, when the suit is portrayed in film or magazine as a hip cool thing worn by the action hero, or out to a night club at night, it is a great fitting comforable thing that looks like you want to wear it. It is a well fitting pair or pants, and a well fitting jacket that happen to match. It is what a suit really is. But these days, it has become an image of cheap fabrick and fit worn only because you have to as some kind of statement of conformity.
