SJ: I was in the shop on Friday getting my new HB side straps tacked and I tried the black Maxwell, size 42, my size. A perfect fit, but the heavy steerhide is not my cup at all. Feels like a button-up 30's HB, basically: snug all the way through, and a wondrous beauty to behold. Heck, even I looked dashing in it!

The Maxwell fit is exactly the same as the Slimfit Stuart (which is exactly the same fit as a 1930s Slimfit Half Belt); however, the pocket structure of the Maxwell is more 1920s-period correct. We'll try to get front, back, and detail shots on a person up soon, but, in the meantime, here's the general fit.

Definitely a nice jacket. Mind you, it would be good to see it on someone who wears them less skintight, so those of us who're less blessed can judge.

I like the snug fit, although it wouldn't work with a protruding belly. FQHH is just too heavy to have any excess, which is why I'd consider trading in my Stockman for something like this.

Carrie, what do you think about wearing it a but longer – a kind of slimfit Teamster? Think that would work?

Hm, not bad, although flaring out a little below the buckles. I'm thinking a trim-fitting Teamster, without the action back, might be what I'm after. Thurston doesn't stick the Teamster, I gather?

So true Carrie.
I ride alot during the spring..summer...fall and wear leather especially when it's cooler. My preference is for the jacket to always cover my belt and back no matter what jeans/pants I am wearing..plus wrists(which mine do). I like a riding jackets with a vintage appearance..but certainly altered to cover a slightly forward lean and reach to serve it's purpose better for a tall guy.

Longer body length (and sleeves) is my preference by a country mile. IMO both Carrie and HD are on the money. I HATE jackets that ride up over my belt, whether riding or not. I also HATE short sleeves that makes me feel like I am wearing a jacket with 'stork arms' whether it 'looks' correct or not.

As I said, I think it is perfectly cool for folks to wear longer versions of vintage style jackets, if that is what they prefer. Especially if they ride a bike. Nothing worse, I would imagine, than having your back exposed on a cold, wet ride!

However, I don't ride, and I do wear relatively high-waisted vintage cut jeans. I also, in cold weather, tend to tuck my shirt/tee into my jeans - I reserve the "shirt on the outside" look for no-jacket weather (break out the hawaiians!!). So a vintage length is just as important on a jacket like this as it is on my A2.

Luckily, Aero/Insurrection can keep us all happy

Exactly right, guys! Although we do a lot of jackets that are custom and quite short, from both Aero and Vanson, our off-the-rack jackets are made for our shop with length added to both the body and arms. The Vanson Model B "House" Jacket, pictured below, is one exception, as we feel the stock lengths are pretty good...

Aero size 42 Cafe' Racer with 27 inch body and 26.5 inch arms

Aero size 42 1930s Slimfit Half Belt with 26 inch body and 26.75 inch arms

Vanson size 44 PLU-3 (custom length Vanson Comet) with 26 inch body and 25.75 inch arms

Vanson size 40 Model B "House" jacket with 25 inch body and 25.5 inch sleeves

However, as others have stated, we can get any jacket, Aero or Vanson, with any body or sleeve length that is desired!

We are currently waiting on a full size run of the Vanson Chopper jackets. Hopefully they will be in soon!

Hi, Van:
It is killer, isn't it? Like I said: even I look dashing in it. Yea, though I was tempted mightily, I left wearing the jacket I arrived in, the incredible seal goat 30's HB. It was sure fun trying that black beauty on. Getting a couple of buttons done was a bit of work; the hide is heavy and thick.
