Thrift store purchase...Champ Upswing (?)

While fruitlessly searching area thrift stores for a Fedora, any Fedora, I found a Champ felt. It has a little tag under the band that says 'UPSWING GRNDALE' it is the softest hat I have ever felt! (so this is what fur felt feels like!) It is a dark green color with a matching felt ribbon w/ brown piping on the ribbon's top and bbotom edges, ~4 1/4" crown maybe, 2" brim, goldish satin lining, black sweatband, size 7 1/8.
-it's nothing at all like what I'm looking for, but it fit oh, so right! -And it is the cutest little hat I've seen! Uh...ok, (re-gathering my manhood after saying 'cute').
I have a tweed sportcoat it will match perfectly. My wife will hate it.:D
I searched the lounge a bit, anyone know more of Champ? -Couldn't find anything Googling.
Pics will follow when I get home late tonight.

citRon,

Which thrift store did you find your hat?

I am somewhat familiar with your area. Matter of fact, I picked up a nice JA Henckels straight razor last week at "the Red Barn".

I know, I know! I thought about that after I posted, I was just excited.
I got it from the Unique Thrift on Preston, near Fern Valley Rd. -Only Fedora they had. BTW, none at the Unique in Portland, Salvation Army or Goodwills in Louisville! -I've checked!

The Red Barn in Middletown-Old Shelbyville Rd?

Looking forward to seeing it, citRon! I can't tell you anything about the company but I can tell you I have a few of their hats and I think they're great! They're a no-nonsense type of hat the ordinary guy would wear.

I've got a Champ Featherweight sitting in front of me right now. It's beautiful, and it lives up to it's name at 2.9 ounces. But sadly... it's a size 7. I'll be posting it on eBay tomorrow night.

In the meantime, waiting to see those pics! :D

Cheers,
Tom

PS Since this thread needs at least one picture at the moment, I'll post one of the Featherweight:

I just added another pic of me wearing it. I can tell a wider brim, and a taller crown will suit me better. Of course, it might actually look better with a collared shirt and jacket- the t-shirt is just what's left after getting home!

I think it looks good on you. As J.T. pointed out, it really does work with the T-shirt. Maybe better than it would with a suit, even.

I rather like that hat. With a narrow, "stingy" brim, it's in a classic trilby shape, and appears to be in superb condition inside and out.

I would not call the color "dark green" at all. In fact, it's a nice medium shade of green that would go with many things. Speaking of color, I really, really like the piping on the hatband. Can't say I've ever seen such piping in a color contrasting with the body of the band and the crown. Sets off the band nicely and brings definition to the whole hat.

Found it at a thrift store; I bet you got it for a steal. How much?

$12.95, which for a thrift store, I thought was kind of high!

You certainly look a lot better in it than I would with my round face! :eusa_clap

I like hats that are a bit on the unusual side and that one sure fits the criteria. If I'd come across it I'd have snagged it as well even knowing it wouldn't look good on me. (I'd be hoping that would change by losing weight. ;) )

Here are the particulars on the Featherweight:
Color: Grayish Tan
Size: 7 (true size per hatter's measuring device)
Brim: 2 3/8"
Crown: 4 1/2" at highest point
Ribbon: 13/16"
Edge: Bound Edge 3/16" wide
Crease: Teardrop
Liner: Plastic teardrop-shaped at the top of the crown

Wonderful hat... I wish I could wear it! I'll just have to keep my eyes open for one in my size.

J.T., I like the ribbon on yours! :eusa_clap

Cheers,
Tom
