I had a bit of luck at a Hollywood area "Goodwill" thrift store last month. Found a 1930s belted-back sportcoat in my size.

Made of a soft, blankety wool with diagonal ribs. The colors are dark olive green and beige.

In addition to having a half-belt and pleats, the back has "bi-swing" sides.

Glad you like it! That particular thrift store seems to get some FINE vintage men's stuff. As of yesterday, there was a late 1920s blue double-breasted suit jacket with diagonal ribs ... about a size 37 R.

Here's the address, fellas:

Nice catch!

Lucky too. Congratulations on your find.
I must say I am green with envy. :D You certainly do have an awesome source of vintage clothing in LA. Much more so than here. So far the best I could do here was a couple of 60s hats in way too small of a size to fit my over sized cranium. :eusa_doh:
Oh well,...I guess I'll just keep looking at all possible sources and eventually some good wearable finds will come up.

Men used to look so nice when they had waists. Why are modern suits so boxy when your jacket looks so much more athletic? What will you wear for slacks?

Great find Marc

I've just returned from holidays and started to catch up on all that I've missed out on around here, and what should I run smack dab into but the phrase 'belted back sportscoat', one of my favourite combinations of words to be sure.

Comgratulations on picking up that swell jacket Marc! I can imagine it teamed with a sharp pair of dark blue trousers, sharp as all get out!

On average people were a lot fitter back then. People walked and manual labor was more wide spread. In the USA our diet was also a lot healthier. All the processed food we eat these days just packs the pounds on you, unless you eat like a bird.

I bet it's also a lot cheaper and easier to manufacture something that's cut like a bag, than a article that is more sculpted and fitted. ;)

great find Marc.
i'd dress this one down a bit personally...no tie, maybe a neckerchief, light slacks...more for fun days out than formal occassions. it looks like it would go with almost any trouser colour too !

This one definitely has something of the '70s about it- to my eye at least.
Maybe it's just the bulk of the cloth... dunno.

The curtain in the background? (I'm serious.)

Marc, that is a seriously rare coat! Very Cary Grant as one mentioned! This coat could go any way you wanted... tie or no tie, open collar shirt or even a clean ivory or white turtleneck sweater!

They made some coats that looked this way in the 70's because 70's fashion were bad knock offs of the 30's as we all know. ;)

With the pleats in the belt and the cut of the coat, it is very much a 30's sport coat! Swell find Marc, pair it with ivory trousers! That would look amazing!

No- the jacket, Silly...

I was really serious, because I had a similar feeling, though weaker probably, and the curtain does add to it for me.

But concerning the jacket - the proportions might look a bit uncommon. A tad long for such a slim jacket. The colour in combination with the shirt's and the tie's colours reminds me more of the sixties than the seventies. (Not that it's strange for the earlier periods.)

And after the seventies, such a fabric would have been rare, so in back-view, the first probable period would be the seventies, again not excluding earlier decades.

You all need your eyes checked

I'm sorry guys; I'm just not seeing 60's or 70's. I've seen many 70's belted back coats... not one of them looked this correct. The fabric was popular in the 30's, I found a 30's suit for a friend once that had this diagonal stripped pattern... it was amazing!

It is also important to take into account that the mannequin it’s on may be a little small for it.
