This or That

I have only a few watches, Hampden, Illinois (Bunn Special), New York, Elgin National, E. Howard, and William Creak.

Of these two, I'd look for a Hamilton as being more representative.

Hamilton and Illinois ended up being the same company and producing similar movements---even the Bunn Special.

Wittnauer had some association with Rolex but I don't remember how long ago.

The Boston Cooking School one is great but you have to adjust for rationing and to taste. :p

Wittnauer or Hamilton?

My mother dropped her copy of BCS (which is more popularly known around here as simply "the Fanny Farmer") into a stew once, and it was the best thing she ever cooked.

I'm partial to the Searchlight Cook Book, myself, and also like Ida Bailey Allen's. And the Maine Rebekahs put out an excellent book as well. I've also got a wooden box given away as a premium in the '20s by Gold Medal Flour with a bunch of good baking recipes.

My first watch, after the Timex Girl Scout job I had as a kid, was a white gold Hamilton, with a cord band. I need to get it cleaned and start using it again.

Linoleum or asphalt tile?

Linoleum. The tiles are too soft and get gouged.

Linoleum, if it can be found. I have a friend in the asbestos abatement business, and he has occasionally provided me with the odd roomfull of asphalt tile, abated from various commercial jobs.

Frieze , tapestry, or Mohair?

May I ask which model Telechron? I still have a good "Hostess" and a "Constance" on the shelf. I used to collect the things, and still love 'em.

I have a Sessions gallery clock in the kitchen in the big house, and a Miller plate clock in green and cream (matches the range) for the new place on which I'm working.

Anyone like Revere clocks, or is the styling just a bit too Neo-Colonial?

I am not sure of the name of the model. It looks like a flower with a clock in the center. :p It probably needs a rebuild because it makes a fair amount of noise now. :p

Revere are fine with me. :p

We sell Maine Root Ginger Brew, a local brand which is the most potent stuff I've ever tasted. If you are at all congested, a slug of this stuff will clear you out just fine.

English muffins, slathered with butter.

Maple syrup or golden syrup?

Coffee (though it depends on the coffee).
Gin or Vodka Martini?

Gin, 2 oz Old Tom Gin, 3/4 oz Vermouth, 1/4 oz Maraschino, a dash of Bitters and a twist.

This was the old-time Martinez cocktail, as made by the fabled Jerry Thomas, the great Barman of the Bowery back in the days of President Grant, and was the direct ancestor of the Martini. Note that the admixture of the bitters, and Maraschino were yet popular in the days before Repeal, as their strong flavors could cover for the uncertain quality of any available (usually synthetic) Gin.
