And even though candy bars were 5 or 10 ¢ when I was young,
I usually made my own treat.
A bowl of sliced bananas & milk with a dash of malted chocolate powder.

Actually, the candy bar was invented in 1847 Joseph Fry. In 1900 we got the most famous of all candy bars, the Hershey. Baby Ruth came out in 1921. Here is the best article I have found on the origin of the name Baby Ruth! http://www.snopes.com/business/names/babyruth.asp A real eye opener!

Baby Ruth or Butterfinger ?

I cannot imagine any kid wearing a pink bunny costume to go trick-or-treating
around the neighborhood except Ralphie, & that’s only because his mom made him wear it !

Not so. KIT-KAT was invented in 1911. "Baby Ruth" in the '80's, named after President Arthur's famous daughter. The "Chicken Dinner" candy bar was introduced by Sperry in 1923. It consisted of a layer of caramel covered with peanuts, covered, with a layer of fondant, the whole covered with milk chocolate. Sounds like a candy bar to me...

The twenties were flood tide for candy bars, especially "celebrity" candy bars. Lindbergh, Amos and Andy, and Rudy Vallee were among the popular-culture figures who had candy bars produced in their honor during that decade.

Hershey's regular or Hershey's with almonds?

Hershey's regular. If I want to deal with nuts I'll visit my in-laws.

Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler?

Too modern for me. I like a plain old pull-out knob on the dashboard, and a dimmer button on the floor.

A friend - a few decades ago - bought a 1960 Buick Wildcat that had a twilight sentinel in it. That was an example of using a sledgehammer to put in a thumbtack as it was complicated, didn't work well and - as you noted - had an easier solution. But the appeal of "automating" it and having something fancy to sell must have driven it.

That said, the car had a 444 cubic inch engine (or something like that), a four-barrel carburetor and gearing for speed as, despite weighing more than two elephants, that car could accelerate.

Country or City?

Small town or city neighborhood. Living in the country would give me the willies.

City Neighborhood - I love the anonymity of big city living. True, if I outlive my girlfriend, they'll only know I'm dead when my body starts to stink, but I'll take that for the (oddly) incredible amount of privacy one has in a large city.

And I'm not sure about living someplace where everybody knows each other because one person's close-knit community is someone else's nightmarish coven of busybodies.

Small town life is what you make of it. You learn who's decent and who's not to be trusted -- you stick close to the former and you avoid the latter. It's a lot easier to do that in a small town than you might think -- and once you've learned your way around you find you don't have to be constantly on the defensive.

I'd go absolutely nuts living out in the middle of nowhere -- worrying about getting shot by some idiot hunter every time you go out to hang the washing, worrying about your cat getting torn to pieces by a fisher in front of your eyes, not being able to get out of your house because of snow that hasn't been plowed and won't be for days, an hour's drive to the nearest store. Nertz to that.

But neither would I want to be in the midst of a "city that never sleeps." I like living in a place where the sidewalks roll up at 9 o'clock and most people are in bed by 11. None of this late-night caterwauling for mine.
