And we cannot forget the Fuller Brush man. In my home town the local dry cleaning shop would deliver and pick up, so we had the Dry Cleaning man also.

Hi Steve, that's another "man" that I forgot about that was also part of the rhythm of life back when I was growing up .
We even had these two guys aside from the garbage man who would come by your house and pick up all your edible
garbage.

We had this hole in the ground that was cement lined ,in that went a "slop" bucket with a handle that folded over and a
big heavy "foot step" lid that covered it .

You stepped on the tongue part of the lid ,it would open and in would go the scraps.

Man you could smell their truck a block away if the wing up right and I always assumed they were pig farmers hence the scraps.

in my home town and many towns on Long Island the local schools worked with a number of nearby music stores that had very inexpensive instrument rentals for those learning and those that were in band. many music stores also handled used instruments that were much less than new...

John,

Where was the L.I. Hometown?

Things that are made to last.

Twelve months warranty doesn’t make me feel secure; it makes me wary that it’s bound break down. Then once it’s broken down and you want to repair it you can’t because no one knows how to/it can’t be gotten into/replacement parts aren’t manufactured. If I want a paper plate to use once and throw away I’ll buy one. I don’t want everything in the shops to be paper plates in the guise of fridges, washing machines, phones, televisions etc. It’s such an awful cycle: this person doesn’t value what they make, that person doesn’t value what they sell and the customers don’t value what they own. Not true of everything of course, but true of enough things to motivate me to write this, which is bad enough don't you think?

Almost without exception, my main gripe about modern society is the total absence of quality in most consumer products made today. It's gotten to the stage that nobody knows what 'quality' is anymore.

We now live in the world the Boys From Marketing have been trying to put us in since the fifties: all trim and no fender. People willingly hand over their money for junk and figure that's just the way it's supposed to be because as far as they know that's how it's always been. We even hear those sentiments right here on the Lounge.

What needs to make a comeback is *outrage.* Not the kind of effete, superficial "you offend me" outrage you get from people who only care about the surface, or the manufactured, stupid, impotent outrage of cable TV and radio talk shows, but real, substantial, directed outrage that isn't afraid to directly confront those who are responsible for causing it. People are being robbed every time they go into a store. What are they going to do about it?

The ceramic mug discussion a while back prompts me to add that the Tim Hortons coffee/donut chain uses proper ceramic mugs in their store locations, though larger sizes are paper only. Roadside outlets and drive-thru-only outlets (now THERE is a scourge) offer paper only (for obvious reasons, to be fair).

Some years ago, we had currency here in the USA that was a higher denomination then merely a hundred dollar bill. It would be nice if they brought back at least the thousand dollar bill, and even nicer if they left a few very large sacks of those large bills, banded and bundled, at my front door! I would gladly give them a tip for doing so!

I can remember when mail was delivered twice a day and once on Saturday. So, we can thank technology for 'improving' our lives once again.

Wow , I don't remember that but I of course take your word for it .
It reminds me of when you used to roll into the gas station and three people would run out to your car,one to fill it ,one to check the oil ,one to clean your windows , my how things have changed.

When i heard this the other day, i was actually suprised that you even had mail delivery on Saturdays. We sure don't. I can't imagine Canada Post ever delivered on saturday. And since the bulk of my mail is either junk or bills, I can't say I'd be excited to see the mailman yet another day of the week :)

I'm very grateful for dear old Royal Mail.... and a pox on those determined to destroy it by privatisation! I've come to a point where I refuse to order from companies I know will be sending stuff out by private courier, because they're such a pain. Never leave any notification, so if I'm out (often happens Monday Friday, given I have a job which is how I can afford to buy stuff by mail.... file under "Not Exactly Rocket Science, DHL...") they often just return to sender.... Grr.

We have the opposite of what you have there I guess. USPS stinks when it comes to getting something to a place in one piece. I have experienced many horrors through the years. If I get something via FedEx or UPS, it is delivered on time and the box still looks like a box when I get it. :p

I loved when bars and clubs had those impressive swizzle sticks that were imprinted / embossed with the club name on it.

I used to have a collection of swizzle sticks that were from the 50's and 60's until somebody could not understand that they were a collection and threw them out.

The problem is people don't realize that USPS and even UPS often throw the boxes. If an item is heavy and the box is thin they tend to go there seperate ways. I used to recieve about 2000 labor claims per year mostly by UPS and the percentage of torn boxes was pretty high.

I also had Fedex deliver some guys laptop that was supposed to go to the makers repair place. How they thought it went to me I have no idea. The address lable was torn off but Fedex did not look in the box, they guys paperwork was in there all of the addresser / addresee contact info was there. The guy was surprise when I called him, so was Fedex.

More often than not, I've had great service from the post office. Now, my current Fed Ex guy is working my last nerve.
