thinking of a person who never saw you...

In the film Citizen Kane the retired Mr. Bernstein told a reporter: 'A fellow will remember a lot of things you wouldn't think he'd remember. You take me. One day, back in 1896, I was crossing over to Jersey on the ferry, and as we pulled out, there was another ferry pulling in, and on it there was a girl waiting to get off. A white dress she had on. She was carrying a white parasol. I only saw her for one second. She didn't see me at all, but I'll bet a month hasn't gone by since that I haven't thought of that girl.'

That quote has always stuck on me. Do you experience this? Every once in a while out of the blue you think of someone you saw briefly in passing years earlier...no rhyme nor reason for it.

The extremely Scandinavian-looking young woman I saw on the train while climbing the Zugspitze in Germany in 1989. She was striking - I fell for her on the spot. Never saw her again, nor spoke to her. But I think of her still.

I do this a lot.

I remember once I walked past a girl at the mall in the early 80s. I must have been about 7 or 8. She had red feathered hair and one of those early 80s metal t-shirts on. There was NOTHING spectacular about her.

I don't know why she's always stood out in my mind, but she has and I still think of her from time to time to this day. It is indeed strange.

Suspended in time

Yes, there are some instances for me, I recall a cute girl at the West Covina Fashion Plaza in the late Eighties with the Ratt T-shirt on. A few young ladies from concerts and such.

Also, does anyone ever experience that time out of time continum feeling, when you get together with an old friend that you haven't seen in years and it is like you haven't been away? You simply pick up from where you left off?

Similarly, there are yearly events for me that when at that singular day event it seems like you pick up with it being a continuation of the last time you were there? I get that uncanny feeling sometimes at the Strawberry Festival (First Sunday in June) at the Danish old Peoples Home near Croton on Hudson. When I get back there, each time, inspite of changes and such, the familiarity of the event, the place, the atmosphere gives me the erie feeling that when ever i am there it is directly connected to each previous time as if there were no intervening time that had passed.

May sound odd to some, kind of a living Deja Vue.

Sincerely,

When I was about four years old, we went to the beach one day, and I saw a man there with bright red hair heading down into the water. I had never seen a person with red hair before that moment, and I was convinced that somehow he'd set his head on fire and was rushing into the water to put it out. I don't remember seeing the man's face -- he was back to me when I noticed him -- but I've never forgotten the flaming red of his hair.

A mother-daughter pair (20/40 y.o., I'd guess) at a Glenn Miller Orchestra concert about 4 years ago, coordinated in the smartest on-spot 30s/40s brown dresses, gloves & hats, and hairdo's you ever saw, similar to:

first time I'd ever seen anyone wearing vintage outside a 40s movie; made me decide I'm absolutely gonna have to find someone for myself who's also into vintage.

Yes indeed!

Years and years ago when I was about fifteen, I worked in a supermarket in South Florida. I spotted a girl in the dairy department who was so captivating and so utterly stunning, she took my breath away. I maneuvered next her and asked her name and she actually was approachable and smiled. Her name was Vivi. I never ever saw her again, but a full thirty-six years later I still remember her face and her smile. At the oddest times Vivi comes into my mind and its like being comforted by a beautiful angel.

There was someone who actually spotted me countless times on the bus, across the street, boarding the train, in Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, etc, and on the train. It wasn't until we were actually on the same train that I knew this.
My first words were, "are you stalking me?"
My last words were, "until we see each other again. If you see my walking down the street, say hello"

In my case, I never saw them, but they did me, and eventually did meet.

It's odd that you say this.

There has been this one women in an Irish pub in Pittsburgh. (and no I wont tell you the year:p ) and she pops into my mind now and then. But the story now is that I've just got some eye surgery done and as I lie here drifting in and out of sleep, I see her again like I did the first time:)

My first year teaching, this man came to my school I guess to do a walk through inspection or something. Anyway, he walked past my classroom and waved at me, I waved back. For one reason or another, I always thought of him every so often, he would just pop into my head.

Flash forward about 7 years later. I'm walking down the street and there is the guy. We saw one another about the same time and we were both like HI! excitedly. We spoke for a bit, apparently we both thought of the other throughout the years. We exchanged phone numbers and spoke on the phone for about two weeks before we went on a date. Our date was boring, NO SPARKS AT ALL and we never called one another again.

When I came home from college I was meeting a friend at our local Starbucks. I got there earlier than her and was sitting in my car waiting I noticed a hipster girl with bottle-blond hair sitting on a bench out front, reading a book and smoking a cigarette. Usually I know most of the kids who go in and out of Starbucks, but I had never seen her before. I thought about talking to her, but seeing as how I was meeting someone, I figured it would be rude. And besides, the girl I was meeting had bottle-blond hair, smoked and read books. No difference, I thought. I'll be damned if I don't think of that girl at least once a week.

There was one young man, when I was in Central America, we locked eyes for a split-second of eternity........that was the first and only experience I've had with love at first sight, of course never saw him again, but he's nice to think about every so often:)

Interesting! I can't say so for me. I've seen many a striking lady, but no brief encounter can stand up to the way the sands of time wash my memory right out that leaky sieve of a brain of mine.

There are folks I remember, who I met in passing, but had some extended interaction with. Love interests, sure, but I only recall ones that I fixated over and chased over a period of time. My third grade teacher, Mrs. Tuvi, made me swoon, but hey - I interacted with her for a whole year.

I'm with you on this one Chanfan. Can't think of anyone in particular... I had a friend who's sister I thought was pretty cool, till I got a little older and soon realized why he didn't get along with her...

I remember back from my first job, when I was 16, there was this fellow. I worked at Carls Jr and he was a regular customer weekend customer, but he came during the day shift and I worked swing, so I never served him or spoke to him. I remember the motorcycle, and that he was always in a green military jacket, for some reason, my teenaged self was drawn to him. Still thing about him from time to time. Ahh well.

In 1968, My ship was in port at Subic Bay in the Philippines. I was a junior officer and had been assigned to courier a package to Manilla. My destination was a building located among the federal buildings downtown and when I got out of my taxi, I noticed a large group of people coming down the stairs fronting the building. As I started up, something in their demeanor told me I should stand aside and give them room. In the midst of the group, I spotted Mrs. Marcos. I was surprised and no doubt stared at her and as they got close, she caught my eye....I will never forget the expression of arrogance and power on her face in the few seconds that we made eye contact. It gave me the same shiver that looking closely at a large snake sends down my spine.
