As far as narrow ties go, I don't like them nearly as small as some people do. 2.75-3" is enough for me. I tend to think they look worse in black satin, too, because of the aforementioned smoked eel effect. Just my two cents.

Only by people who have no idea there was a time called 'the late-fifties/early-sixties'. (Actually the narrow tie came before the modern wide tie, dating back to the late 19th century.)

I think it may have been more 82-86 era although posibly earlier. I seem to recall a picture of the Cars and Rick Ocasek with a skinny tie.
