Because I have been caused mental and emotional harm at the hands of all these "Fedora Lounge" dive places": I can't sleep at night, I fear small squeaking noises, I can't kiss my wife without weeping, and I don't know where I've left my car keys -- ever.

I once met a guy who used to put on a thing in melbourne about 30 years ago called the "Cairo Club": he'd take over a bar/lounge area of an old pub and throw in a few potted palms and a swing band, and everyone would turn up in period 30's/40's fashions. It was great, and a couple of hundred would turn up. But he only did it 3 or 4 times a year because speaking from his experience he said if it ran all the time, people would get slack and lose the sense of occasion, turning up in their normal clothes and whatever, ruining the vibe for those who made the effort, and in no time at all, it was just some casual hangout again...you need a very solid core of retro dressers to keep the atmosphere going on a regular basis for such an enterprise...and how many are there wherever you are?
