I seem to recall a Stooges short that had Curly (IIRC) looking at a gorilla through a mirror without any glass and the two were making the same hand movements and Curly wasn't sure if he was the gorilla or not! Can't remember the name of that one...off to do more research!

BTW, one of the best lines in the 1937-1939 set is from Tassels In the Air, when Moe tells Curly that his Pig Latin name would be "Umday." Moe goes on to say, "You're Umday in any language!'

You're probably thinking of IDLE ROOMERS, where Curly confuses his reflection in the mirror with that of a wolfman-type monster. This short is also noteworthy as the debut short of the lovely and talented Christine McIntyre.

That's the one! Another thirty-year-old mystery solved! Thanks!

B-A-Bay...

That charmingly performed song (and the rest of the short itself) is one of my all-time faves with the Stooges. One of my friends used to have a 16mm print of it that we watched about a gazillion times, back when that was the only way to see the Stooges other than on local kiddie TV shows...

I'm not much on the Stooges -- the Marx Brothers are my comedy team of choice -- but here's a tip for those of you who are: You can own these sets for 20% off an already discounted price -- about $16 each -- if you buy them before June 22 (I think) at deepdiscount.com.

Use the coupon code "SUPERSALE" at checkout.

That discount applies to all non-preorder DVD purchases at that site, by the way, not just the Stooges.

I had my wife watch that short and she's come a long way from her prior Stooges stance. She absolutely adores this song, especially the "Curly's a dope!" line sung by the girls...

From what I've read, Sony plans to release all of the Three Stooges short films by the end of 2009. Three years per release at every three months should get the job done, at least as far as my interest goes, as I only plan on getting up to 1952.

RE: Volume Three (1940-1942)

Highlights of the third volume (for me, at least):

1940:

Boobs In Arms- As manic and insane a finale as you'll find in a Stooges short.

1941:

I'll Never Heil Again- IMO the better of the two "Hailstone" shorts. I remember this one from childhood and I loved it then, too.

In the Sweet Pie and Pie- Watch how the Stooges show the women "who's in charge"!

1942:

Cactus Makes Perfect- Still painful (for Curly!) to watch after all of these years.

A great Stooge book!

As a Stooge-a-holic since I was big enough to turn on a television set, I highly recommend "The Complete Three Stooges, The Official Filmography and Three Stooges Compilation." by Jon Solomon.

It contains an in-depth synopsis of every Stooge appearance on film arraigned in order of release. Each chapter covers one year.

Summers breaks down everything from what song was used during the opening credits, to how they spell they Curly's name (at first it was Curley). He also includes explainations of some of the Stooge lines and how they were related to politics and other current events of the day.

It's the perfect companion piece to those looking to by the newly released
shorts on DVD.

As an adult I have found all kinds of new things to laugh at thanks to this book.

John in Covina-The short with Curly as a boxer who goes crazy when he hears
"Pop goes the Weasel" is called Punch Drunks. It's only the second short done for Columbia and was written by Moe. It contains one of my favorite Stooge exchanges:

Curley-"You can't have any hamburgers"

Moe-"Oh yeah? Why not?

Curly-"Because the meat's too fresh!"

Just a caveat for those purchasing Volume Four of the Three Stooges Collection: Curly had a stroke in 1945 and his performances sometimes suffer as a result. His speech isn't as fast and he comes off more like one of the post-Shemp Curly "replacements." Curly's diminished power is sad to see, but a diminished Curly is still better than no Curly at all. All that aside, I am looking forward to Shemp's arrival in volume five, Sony willing...I'm having a ball watching these sets, especially after a long day at work.

"Queen of the Walk-On"

Ever since I started watching these Stooges short films, I've noticed the presence of Stooge supporting actress Bess Flowers. I've seen her throughout my 1930s DVD collection. So far, she's been in My Man Godfrey; The Awful Truth; and Holiday. She worked!
