Paris = nutella crepes bought from a street vendor
Provence = campari and orange juice. I know that it's weird to think of an Italian aperitif in the context of the South of France, but hey, I'm weird!
Lagos, Portugal = Sangria!

California sourdough bread (San Francisco if you want more specific than that). When I'm visiting my parents in Colorado they have something called "sourdough" in the grocery stores, but it's only that in name. The best and truest sourdough is in California. (That is going to be one of the first things I eat when I get back!)

Cincinnati has chili (alone or on top of hot dogs).

The foods that make me think of Santa Barbara are Woodstock's pizza and Freebirds nachos (although they're near rather than actually in the city).

And for the Bay Area in general I think of pho.

I remember that place at Fisherman's Wharf with the loaves shaped like alligators and crabs, and speaking of crabs; how can we speak of San Francisco without mentioning the Dungeness crab? Once again, from a street vendor (that seems to be a theme running through this). I love the taste of these with a nice cold beer.

My most recent discovery was the she-crab soup at Hudson's on Hilton Head Island, SC. There's no real reason to eat anything else after having it, but the shrimp boats pull right up to the restaurant and offload their catch several times daily, so the seafood is incredibly fresh.

So if you're in the lowcountry of SC, you must visit Hudson's.

Whether it is Bacala, the famous salted cod of Rome, or Boston's Legal Seafood's clam chowder, there are some tastes that are unique and special to a specific city or region, and in eating them all of the memories of that place suddenly return.

What associations do you have? In my travels, I can think of dozens, but I am more interested in learning yours...

Ah, the famous bacala. What I call the unofficial food of Southern Europe. It's the Portuguese filet mignon. Whole stores in Spain are dedicated to it. Bacala, bacalao, bacalau. However you spell it or make it is fine with me.:eusa_clap

It's such a pity that the it has such a negative connotation amongst Americans of these descents. They just don't realize how good it is.:)

Filet mignon!? You must be kidding. The stuff stinks so bad when you make it that you have to fumigate the house after you finish cooking it. PU! :eusa_doh:
Just what I want dried fish that flies have landed on for months. MMMMMM. :p

I have to have the Cardiac Arrest Meal

Whenever I go to Hawaii I have to make my way to a hole in the wall, and get the cardiac arrest plates; kalua pork, teriyaki beef, macaroni salad, rice, haupia, malasadas, kalibi ribs, chicken katzu, portuguese sausage, loco moco (rice, egg on top of the rice, spam and covered in gravy), spam musubi. For malasadas and pao doce (Portuguese donut and sweet bread) I have to go to Leonards Bakery on Kapahulu St. or if on the Big Island there's Texeira's Drive-Inn in Honokaa on the way to Waimea.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, I have to eat a linguisa sandwich (portuguese sausage) made with sourdough. For great breads go to Cuneo Bakery on Baden Avenue in South San Francisco.

P.S. Luso Mercado across from Bayfair?

Yes, the National Dish! Especially tasty when covered with chopped eggs. YUMMMMMM! In fact bacalao can be made in several different dishes and every single one is mouth watering.

I second that Ah Venice Hem! I'm sitting here drinking a Belini that Hem just made me, and I have such nice memories of Harry's in Venice and strolling through San Marco in the evening.

I have lot's of foods that remind me of places. Banana and Nutella crepes from a street vendor in Paris. Although I ate a lot of them in Italy, it's a new phenomenon for Gelataria in Italy to make crepes, needless to say I ate a lot of them.
I also ate a lot of really good pasta carbonara, which will always remind me of sitting in front of the Pantheon and eating a really good meal.

I grew up in Rhode Island, and we have a hot dog place there called Onleyville New York System Wieners. As far as I know they don't make wienies like these in NYC. They are a wienie topped with a chopped meat mixture, chopped onions and celery salt. They are really good, especially after a night on the town, nothing beats waiting at the wienie window at 3AM!!

Cheesesteaks remind me of Philly.
Soft pretzels and roasted nuts, particularly cashews, remind me of NYC.
Beef teriyaki on a stick reminds me of Quincy Market, thick creamy clam chowder reminds me of Boston, so do oysters. Lobster Bakes remind me of New England in general, but really remind me of summers spent on the boat on Block Island.
Stone Crab reminds me of South Beach in Miami. Every time I go there I have to go to Joe's Stone Crab, the greatest place to get this seasonal delicacy.
Hmm, this thread is making me hungry!

Boston to me will always be Legal Sea Foods. I've never had a bad meal at Legal.
"If it isn't fresh, it isn't legal!" That's there motto. I actually have a family link to Legal's, so I grew up on their food, back in the day when they only had three small restaurants. We really had no idea that it would become a national operation. I'm biased, but it is one of the best seafood restaurants I've ever been to. I've never had a bad meal there.

I can't believe I forgot about the dungeoness crab. Those were really good. I wish Boston had street vendors like that!

Well, it is crab season right now HJ and Daisy. On Christmas Eve I always try to make a side trip to buddy's mom's house for about an hour. Every year she buys a bunch of crab and we sit in the kitchen and crack them. Been doing that since high school.lol However, due to the economies of scale the best crab gets sold to the casino's in Vegas. Boy! Last week when I was there I spent 30 minutes at the crab section alone.:D

Los Angeles = burgers. Surprised? Me too! When I moved here I thought I had fallen into the black hole of cheap culinary delights. But I was wrong. Fat Burger. In n' Out. Hamburger Hamlet. And a wonderful invention available at many corner grills - the Ortega Burger; a cheese burger draped with an Ortega chili!

I moved to Omaha from SoCal last year, and how I miss In n' Out!! :( :( :(

Anchorage has some good stuff but the two biggies for me are Halibut Taco's or the Smoked Salmon Caesar at Humpy's Alehouse.

Then there's a piece of cheese off the block (a block of cheddar sitting on the bar) at "F" Street, any of the Moose's Tooth pizzas and any one of the dozens of local craft and micro beers.

But I think it'd be the Taco's... or a steak at Club Paris... or homemade fried chicken at Lucky Wishbone...

Nope, definitely the Tacos.

:D
