The Stetson One-Hundred "100"

7 1/4 from the 50s to early 60s is my guess. Looks nice. If you ever want a trick to figure out the size on an unmarked hat holler.

By the late 1950s Stetson was using the mixed number size tag. I’m fairly confident it’s a 1950s hat, but I don’t know how far back the 100 went. Due to inflation (in reverse) I don’t think the 100 goes all that much farther back, but I’ve been wrong before.

There are catalogs which show Open Road 100s in 1951 and 1952. Not certain about dress hats with a Mode Edge, but stars/stars would seem to indicate earlier in the decade.

Thanks, Jim. It’s not in perfect condition, but I’m very bummed it doesn’t fit. I already found it a good home...doubt another will ever cross my path. The felt is outstanding.

I think you’re right on. ‘52 was the generally accepted date for the plastic liner and maple leaf on the crest, give or take.

Overlap with the leather and liner crests went on for a while, more so with the leather sweats, less with the liner, and to my observation more importantly hardly at all with the size tags. As you point out the later 50s and early 60s size tags had the numeral and fraction togetther.

Given all that I’d guess the same as you - ‘52 to ‘55 or so.

All the best!
Daniel

This latest One-Hundred as a shot in the dark. I knew that the chances were it wouldn’t fit, but I also suspected I could find it a home as long as it wasn’t too small. I worried it would turn out to be a 6 5/8 or some similar small size. As it turns out, the factory size tag was still attached, but it was tucked under the sweatband. It’s in decent shape, with some ribbon water stains and there is a faint line all the way around the crown that I suspect was caused by another hat being stored top of it.

The felted/Mode edge brim is 2 1/2 inches wide and the open crown is just shy of 6 inches. The sweat is 2 inches wide and the ribbon is 3/4 inches wide. The liner is not sewn in and is help in place with tabs that suggest it was professionally reblocked at some point. The size tag is a fraction only (not a mixed number), so possibly one of the earlier 100s?

Fantastic find, Brent, but unfortunately again no luck for you. Wouldn't have minded if this had turned out to be a size 7. I especially like the felted edge on this one.

How wide is the edge, Brent? 1/4 or is it closer to 1/2?

Howdy all, I guess I’ll add to this thread with my local 100 find! I found my 100 complete with the case, plastic holder and a plastic cover with the keys. I bought it from the original owners grandson for $80. Yes, $80. It looks to have been never worn. It wasn’t broken in at all. It only has a slight blemish on the crown and it’s hardly noticeable. No amount of money will separate this hat from me. Size 7 1/2, I stretched it out a little bit and it fits my head perfectly! I may post my own thread with more pictures of the hat and the story how I found it or I can post it here. Just let me know!

That’s a horrible hat. Absolutely terrible. If you pay for shipping and throw in a twenty dollar bill I’ll dispose of it for you. ;)

GREAT find!

Howdy all! I’d like do introduce myself then share with y’all how I found my cheap S100. My name is Elton and my favorite hat shape is the Optimo Panama hat (hence the name). I collect fountain pens, pocket watches, vintage wrist watches and straight razors in addition to hats. I usually scan through Facebook Market when I’m bored for anything I like to collect when I ran into the ad for this hat for $80. I nearly my pants when I saw the price so I jumped on it. I went straight to the sellers house and picked it up along with another Stetson 7x of the same vintage that was a smaller size and gave it to my fiancée. The 100 is a 7 1/2 and came complete with the Samsonite case, plastic hat rest and plastic hat liner. I reshaped the crown because I can’t pull off a small cattleman’s crease. I like how it came out and honestly there’s no amount of money that’ll separate the hat from me!

Very nice. We don’t mind seeing 100s any chance we get.

Don’t be surprised if one of the bartenders (site moderators) merge this new thread into the established Stetson 100 thread. It’s just the way they do things here to keep the place manageable and related posts in one thread.

Looking forward to seeing more of your collection!

Awesome. Not many show up for that price!
