I like such ties. You can pair them up with busy shirts and use them to dress up an otherwise dressed-down day. I've seen them in old Esquire magazines so they are vintage.
But who makes them now (at a good price)? I think of them as low-end. Rather like the silk knot cufflinks, so it's hard to justify $100 (see the Tie Economics thread).

These are nice ties. I like to pair mine with a jacket that has a textured feature. Herringbone, houndstooth, tweed, etc.
I have a black silk from Brooks Bros.
Cost $2 bucks secondhand.

I got a raft of these at Barneys NY, Polo and Paul Stuart over the years. They used to be $25, now they're up in the $60s and higher. Almost all are Italian made.

Other places such as Brooks or J. Crew have them now and then as a "new wrinkle." But they ought to be a mainstay. They're THAT versatile.

Unfortunately it may be too late to promote any type of tie that's not standarized business wear.

Silk knit ties are a true classic: they've been around for more than 100 years, and have never really gone out of style. The solid colored ones are the BEST ties to wear with strongly patterned suits and sportcoats, no matter how loud the houndstooth, chalkstripe, or glen plaid might be. And as simple as they are, they look incredibly handsome ... perhaps because of their simplicity.

Cary Grant loved them. Here's an example:

My only complaint (I always have at least one) is that the width is standardized about 2", which is a little narrow for broad lapels such as Grant's above. I have a few about 2 3/4 wide and they get a lot of wearings.

Silk knit ties!

No thrift stores here in Gainesville ever seem to have them. I contacted a couple people from here who make rounds at a few thrift stores in NYC that supposedly have plenty of them, but I haven't heard back. :(

Specifically, I'm looking for some in dark navy or black that are 2" wide with the traditional square bottom. Here's a good example, but $50 is a bit much for me. eBay doesn't seem to turn up anything of note, having just looked.

Help, please!

Brooks' stuff is a little wide for my taste, but I'll give it a look over. I'm certainly interested in getting a bow tie someday. :) Thanks. I'm calling the nearest J. Crew outlet tomorrow to see if they have any, so wish me luck.

These are a specialty item at best anywhere but New York. Even here you can only be assured of a good selection at Paul Stuart or Barneys.

They have the problem of many of the clothes we like, namely that they are neither here nor there. They are never appropriate for business dress (no, not even if they're black or navy), and the "sporty tie" is quickly evaporating as a category.

Mine are mostly from Barney's, Bergdorf Goodman and Paul Stuart. And, Ive never seen a silk knit tie that wasn't Italian made.
